  • If the exit is done by the idle timeout the exit code is !=0

MAME Porn?
If you haven't noticed, the last release of MAME contained a few new porn games on top of the ones that were already there. Also, the latest MAME WIP shows 4 more porn games that may be included in the next release of MAME. One of which could be mistaken for kiddy porn. Anyway, now's your chance to vote: Should the porn games be removed from MAME? I for one think it's gone beyond good taste. If mamedev removed gambling and Pong from MAME, I think the porn should go also. Update: It appears that about 60% of the visitors here are wankers, shame. =)

MAME Needed Soon
The MAME Needed Soon section has been updated with games possibly needed in the next release of MAME. Download them from the ROM Section under MAME.

MESS v0.37b6 Released
MESS is a multi-console emulator that is based on the MAME source code. It's also one emulator for the life of me I cannot figure out. It was supposedly released yesterday, but not available on their site till tonight. Hint: when you release a new version, put it on your site, k? Anyway, download it from the Console Emulation section.

Snes9x Win v1.31 Released
Snes9x is an excellent SNES emulator for Windows. This release adds the following:
  • Snes9x DirectSound code modified - the mixing block size is now always 10ms for Windows 95/98/2000 and 20ms for NT 4.x, now there should be no need to enable Sync Sound when a large sound buffer is required (helps emulation speed). The maximum sound buffer length values have been updated to reflect the smaller mixing block size.
  • Changed the DirectSound code back to use an offset from the play position as the place to write new sample data into the sound buffer - on NT 4.x the write position seems to vary randomly rather than being a fixed distance infront of the play postion as documented. Now I know why I used the play position originally!
  • Changed the DirectSound code to fill the sound buffer at the write position supplied by DirectSound, rather than just before the current play position - should help reduce latency.
  • Added an auto-detect method for interleaved mode 2 Super FX ROM images - well, not really auto-detect: if the game crashes and its a Super FX game, Snes9x assumes its in interleaved mode 2, demangles the ROM image and tries to run the game again.
  • Had to update the Snes9x Windows registry version number as the additional diagonal settings make old registery settings incompatible.
  • Added diagonal keyboard controls to the Windows port, as requested by several users.
  • Changed PPU code to return zero when reading non-existent registers - the game Equinox relies on this due to an original game coding bug.
  • Included FMOD sound driver support to Windows port - people experiencing broken sound or delayed sound, etc, might want to give it a try.
  • Tales of Phantasia - un-interleaved format ROM memory map changes to match odd ZSNES format, now the hacked ROM works.
  • Changed NMI again. Made reading or writing to PPU register 0x4210 clear NMI pending flag again, without this Super Tennis does not work.
  • Changed NMI timing back to be the same as several versions ago and just special cased Cacoma Knight instead - although kept the code to prevent the re-triggering of an NNI more than once in the same frame.
Download it from the Console Emulation section.

  • We also made some changes to, and added documentation for trace mode which can help developers debug their games.

Download Changes
Slow day, so I decided to take care of some housekeeping. I've changed the downloading of files slightly. Standard users shouldn't see any difference, but if you're using Getright or GoZilla, it may work better for you. I've never been a fan of those programs so I've never really used them, but I tried GoZilla today and it wanted to download the download page instead of the archive file. If anyone has a problem downloading, let me know. Please, don't e-mail me about problems downloading ROMs, thanks.

MAME WIP: Hard Drivin'
That's right! One of the early full-screen 3D games; Atari's Hard Drivin' (1988) now has a preliminary MAME driver. I remember being wowed by the smooth real-time 3D graphics in this game (as was everyone else). Here's the latest MAME WIP news along with screen shots:
  • August 10th 2000: Nicola Salmoria fixed the protection bugs in Slam Masters. Zsolt Vasvari converted several drivers for correct split screen functionality. Aaron Giles did some brilliant work and finally got the polygon graphics working in the preliminary Hard Drivin' / Stun Runner driver, which requires about 2 GHz to run properly.

Video Game Characters vs. Swinging Blades
Hot off The Onion press wire: "A coalition of video-game characters representing the nation's leading systems appeared before Congress Monday to decry "the pointless, deadly presence" of spinning blades in video-game landscapes." A shocking statistic is Tomb Raider's Lara Croft estimate that "she has lost more than 600,000 lives to spinning, falling, swinging, and suddenly appearing blades this year alone." The characters are calling for a boycott until manufacturers take "significant measures" to improve safety. I'm with Mario on this one, this should stop. Read all about it at the above link and thanks to Gerard P. for the news.
