Last Chance to Win an Arcade Spinner!
|
Tomorrow, instead of giving away $20 cash to a random mailing list
subscriber, I'm giving away a arcade spinner (Twisty-Spinner $49.95
retail value). This spinner gives you a true arcade feel for games
like Tempest, Arkanoid, Tron and more. With the correct weighting and
knob size, you'll be able to spin that Tempest "claw" around like you
did in the arcade. This spinner is made by the same people that brought you the
Twisty-Grip.

UltraHLE to Continue?
There's a rumor floating around that UltraHLE will continue. It
appears that this rumor could be true. Also, I've heard that there
are one or two other N64 emulators that are getting close to running
commercial games at similar speeds.
bleem! to be Released Within a Week:
It seems that bleem! (The Playstation emulator for the PC) will finally
be released in the very short term. I've heard a rumor that it will be
released tomorrow, but their page doesn't confirm this. Stay tuned.

Retrocade News:
Toobin' is working and running VERY fast at 140-160fps on a PII/350.
That's almost twice as fast as in MAME. The thought is that another
10-20fps can be squeezed out of it before its release. What's next?
Marble Madness and other System 1 games! Also, a beta version should
be released this weekend so I'll keep you posted.
Nintendo to Sue UltraHLE Authors:
Nintendo's PR manager Beth Llewelyn said: "Nintendo is very
disturbed that Reality Man and Epsilon have widely distributed a
product designed solely to play infringing copies of copyrighted works
developed by Nintendo and its third-party licensees,"
Is Beth serious? First off, they are suing to handles? If anyone out
there is about to release another N64 emulator, please change your
handle to Road Runner, Grover, Bugs Bunny, Elmo, so something really
stupid like that. I'd love to see the case of Nintendo vs. Cookie
Monster. Also, UltraHLE is not designed to play infringing copies of
copyrighted works, it's designed to play legal copies. If people
choose to pirate copyrighted software, go after them not the legal
emulator authors. It's just like gun manufacture. Companies make
guns for legal use. However, some people choose to use guns for
illegal purposes. Should guns be illegal because they can be used
for illegal purposes? No! The same goes for other things like CD
recorders. CD recorders aren't illegal, if people choose to use them
illegally, they THEY are the ones to go after, not the technology.
Nintendo is playing an all or nothing game here. If they loose, it
will authorize emulation and cartridge archival devices. Nintendo,
heed my warning: Let it go, you have a lot to loose and nothing to gain.
Happy Birthday to Me:
Okay, I'm 30, now lets drop it.

Emulation can Save Your Life!
There's another good reason to use an emulator instead of buying the
console hardware. Seems that Sony's Playstation has had some problems
where kids are getting electrocuted! Sony and the Consumer Product
Safety Commission call it a "potential shock hazard". Seems that
Sony could reduce it's liability if they'd go with software emulation
instead of that nasty shocking hardware. Read all the details on Sony's
site from the above link. Thanks to StoneNT for this "shocking" news.
Ultimate Patchers Cheat Database Updated:
The Ultimate Patchers cheat database has been updated to version 6.4E.

Judge Rejects Sony's Request to Block Connectix Emulator!
This is HUGE news! ZDNet has reported that a federal district
court has rejected Sony's request to block shipments of Connectix's
Playstation emulator. Maybe this will pave the way for Bleem being
released and UltraHLE being worked on again! I'm glad that Connectix
has the balls to release this emulator and not to fold when a giant
like Sony files a lawsuit. Connectix is fighting our battle. Support
them in anyway possible.

UltraHLE Playable Guide:
For those of you using this emulator, here's a great guide for games
that are playable using UltraHLE. The current count is 31! It even
shows screen shots and details for each playable game. Check it out!
Nintendo Considering Lawsuit Against UltraHLE:
Nintendo's spokeswoman Beth Llewelyn said yesterday that Nintendo is
looking into filing a lawsuit against the UltraHLE authors. Nintendo
really doesn't have any option but to file a lawsuit. If they didn't,
it would send the message that emulation is okay with them. What's
interesting is a quote from Ms. Llewelyn:
"They obviously had to circumvent our security chip. It
promotes continued piracy."
Reading between the lines this statement reads: "Emulation is LEGAL
and we know we can't win an emulation case in court. However,
circumventing security chips hasn't been tested in court and we believe
this is illegal." I see where they're going with this, but they will
still fail to win this type of case because circumventing a security
chip isn't illegal either. For example: remember when software came on
floppy disks and the manufactures created security technology so you
couldn't make a backup copy? This practice was ruled illegal
because it infringed upon the user's rights to make a legal archive
copy. If Nintendo dares to bring up this issue in court, they risk
their security chip being named illegal instead. How many times have
you had a CD or CD-ROM go bad? I have. I've also had Atari 2600
cartridges go bad as well. This is the reason it's LEGAL to make an
archive copy.
What's Nintendo to do? They know emulation is LEGAL. They also know
that if they start pushing the security chip issue in court, it could
backfire and actually allow N64 backup devices like the Z64 and others
to be named LEGAL. Here's what I think they plan on doing. First,
file a lawsuit against the UltraHLE authors as well as sites that
carry the emulator (which, by the way, I don't). It will scare the
Hell out of would-be emulation authors and site ops. Then, never
actually take the case to trial. This way, Nintendo gets what they
want and, at the same time, don't risk anything. Just my take on how
things will pan out, time will tell...
Ultimate Patchers Cheat Database v6.4B:

MAME v0.35 beta 2 games. Download it from the M.A.M.E. section under

UltraHLE Fix v0.1 Will Delete Your System Directory!
The utility UltraHLE Fix v0.1 (supposed to enhance UltraHLE) is a
trojan that deletes your Windows\System directory (and a bunch of other directories as well)!
Whatever you do DON'T download or run this file! I'm appalled that Zophar's
Domain would post this type file on their site. And it doesn't make a
difference if they didn't know, they should have tested it first.
