MAME! v0.36 Beta 8.1 Released!
MAME! is my enhanced version of MAME which adds a few features to make MAME more enjoyable. Only a few lines of code are changed, so compatibility should still be 100%. Features include the removal of non-critical warning messages and game information on startup and modified reports to make using front-ends, like Arcade@Home, easier and faster to use. The name was changed to MAME! to conform with the modified MAME license agreement. Download it from the M.A.M.E. section.

MAME v0.36 Beta 8 Will be On-line Shortly:
It's been released, I'm downloading and compiling now. The binary will be up shortly.

EMU+ v0.36 Beta 7 Released:
Dan finally got around his computer problems enough to catch up to latest version of MAME. EMU+ is an enhanced version of MAME that adds a bunch of new features.
  • Added support for the Top 3 MARP hiscore listings. Accessed via the tab menu.
  • Added Robert J Ragno's mamegrip and mamejoy changes. Along with Andy's OPTIMame changes. Big thanks for all the work on those guys.
  • Analog support should work (i.e., the analog pad on the Xterminator should work smoothly)
  • Fixes annoying (but harmless) crashes upon exiting that occur on a few systems.
  • Produces a "grip.out" file that shows the state of your joysticks and is useful for debugging.
  • Ability to turn auto-centering on and off from the Analog Control menu, thanks to Andy and his OptiMame.
  • The option to choose which analog joystick axis corresponds to which analog axis in the game. Thus, you can swap the analog X and Y axes, or use the flippers and throttle on the Xterminator (or an inferior controller) as true analog controls. To use this, select the menu option "Analog Axes" and use left and right to select the axis. Only available analog axes will show up. "default" chooses the first analog stick. (These settings aren't saved...)
  • Debug output is created for all joysticks, in "joy.out".
  • If an invalid joystick name is entered, the user is asked for a valid one, with a menu (like with sound).
  • Unsigned axes (such as throttles, commonly) are fixed in MAME.
  • Throttles register digitally, and can be used as buttons.
  • A held-down button will not mess up the joystick settings process.
  • Some more small Allegro fixes, such as in the axis names.
  • All controls on the devices should be supported. The names should also be accurately fetched from the GrIP driver.
  • Added guihost support for rom audits via A@H front end. Thanks Tim. See the readme_emu.txt for more info on what guihost = yes does.
Please note that the EMU+ home page is out right now. Download it from the M.A.M.E. section.

Free US Calls from Anywhere in the World!
That's right, you can now make unlimited free calls to anyone in the US from anywhere in the world! Dialpad is a Java application that uses your computer to dial any US number. I tried it with several people and it worked. Then, I had someone from Australia call me through the Dialpad server and it worked as well. Note that if you're in the US, you can't call overseas, but works the other way. What's the catch? Really, there isn't any. The Java application window also includes a banner. Your unlimited calls are paid by the advertising. Very cool, try it out.

Position of Congress on Classic Emulation:
After yesterdays bizarre news from the House of Representatives about Space Invaders (see above link), I decided to do some probing on the subject of Congress' view of classic emulation. I got a reply from a congressional staff member that wishes to remain anonymous. He said, and I quote: "[we] enjoy reliving fond arcade memories from the past." and: "It's safe to say, though, that you won't be seeing any anti-emulation legislation getting through this Congress.". I'm speechless.

House is Prepared for Space Invaders:
I didn't believe this link when I first saw it, but it really is on the Office of the House Majority Leader's web site (note the URL). I'm guessing there's a classic game fan that works on their web site. Thanks to Richard for the link.

Appears that Atila from Retrogames has a Fan:
Check out the above link. I don't think this guy likes Atila from Retrogames very much. It also seems that the same person is fairly miffed at me as well. Thanks to Exodus3D for the links.

Arcade Party Pak Released:
Very cool, Midway releases more classic games:
    "Midway announced on Wednesday that its latest title, Arcade Party Pak, has released for the PC and PlayStation. The Pak includes the following arcade classics: Rampage, Smash TV, Super Sprint, Toobin', and KLAX. Exclusive to the PlayStation version will be 720 (Degrees), and exclusive to the PC version will be Rampart."
Check out the above link for the complete details.

MAME for Digita:
This story has been floating around all day yesterday. Is it possible that MAME could run on a digital camera? Yes, it's possible. I've been in contact with someone from FlashPoint (the company that designed Digita). I hope to have an animation of the camera playing a MAME game tomorrow (that is, if it's for real). My policy is that an emulator is fake till I see it or it's proven to me. A site on AOL is not proof by any means. Nor is it when the coders name is James Surine (take the J and S off that name for some fun). I decided to try porting MAME over to my Nikon CoolPix 950 digital camera and was able to get KOF99 running. Boy does a digital camera emulating KOF99 suck batteries!

Jnes v0.26c Released:
Jnes has been upgraded to v0.26c. This release has "some cosmetic updates, and a rather large processor alignment issue was discovered that affected performance." Download it from the Console Emulation section.

MAME v0.36 Beta 7.1 Released:
This is an enhanced version of MAME which makes using MAME in a front-end or a cabinet more enjoyable. Three basic features have been added:
  • The guihost command which removes the non-critical warning messages and the game information pages on startup (great for people using cabinets).
  • Games listed as "NO GOOD DUMP KNOWN" don't show as a bad ROM set (great for those using the Arcade@Home front-end).
  • -verifyroms lists missing ROMs as bad (great for those using the Arcade@Home front-end).
Read the changes.txt file for details on each of these enhancements. Note that the source code changes are included in the archive. Download from the M.A.M.E. section.

Greatly Expanded Arcade Emulation Section:
Check out the Arcade Emulation section to see the greatly expanded list of arcade emulators that I will now be carrying. Not every arcade emulator is listed, but I believe all the major players are available for download. Check it out at the above link or on the left navigation menu.

bleem! v1.5 Released:
It's a little late, but at least it's here. I haven't tried it out yet, but I hear it's a great improvement. There are a TON of enhancements to this release, so visit the bleem! site at the above link to read all about it and download the full version (if you have the CD key).

RockNES v0.98 Released:
RockNES version 0.98 has been released. This version adds the following:

  • Mapper #19 improved (still buggy);
  • Mapper #23 fixed (Kid Dracula works ok);
  • Mapper #24 fixed (CV3j works ok);
  • Mapper #25 fixed (Gradius ][ works ok);
  • Mapper #26 fixed (Madara works ok);
  • NES NameTable mirroring fixed (CastleVania 3j mirroring is perfect);
  • Fixed ROM information display (mirroring);
  • Fixed an old sprite priority problem;
  • Fixed screen clearing (normal and intensity);
  • Fixed `-b' option (battery file, working again);
  • Fixed a mapper #0 loading bug;
  • Removed a sound hacking added in 0.97 (some notes were too short);
  • Loopy's palette updated (-pal 2);
  • Minor optmizations (less math) and cosmetic changes;
  • Compiled with Allegro 3.9.26 (WIP), hence support for Grip/Grip4 inputs;
  • Binary compressed with UPX 0.84;
  • Documentation (+FAQ) slightly updated.
Download it from the Console Emulation section.

Tron3D:
So it's not emulation related, but it is a modern version of the retro game Tron. This version is very cool in that it gives you a first person view from inside the light cycle. It also has OpenGL, Glide, and DirectX versions. While hardly the most complex game, it's still fun to play. A net version of this game would really be cool. Thanks to Colton for the link.

MAME32 v0.36 Beta 7 Released!
MAME32 v0.36 beta 7 has been released. This brings the official Windows 32-bit version up to date with the DOS version. Download it from the M.A.M.E. section.

Friday, October 22nd, 1999
Updated Catver.ini File:
Gerardo has updated the Arcade@Home front-end Catver.ini file to add MAME v0.36 beta 7 games. This is an optional file that adds category and version information to each game in Arcade@Home. Because this information is not stored in MAME, this file is used. Downlaod it from the Front-Ends section.

Latest PACDX Private Beta:
Received the latest private beta of PACDX and it looks great. If you don't know what PACDX is, it's a Pac-Man emulator (written by Mike Green of Speek & Spell Simulator fame) that has been updated with fresh new graphics. Their site at the above link now shows side by side screen shots of the standard Pac-Man and the enhanced PACDX. Because it's a Pac-Man emulator at the core, your old patterns and techniques still work. There could be a public release as soon as Saturday if this last beta turns out to be stable (which it appears to be).

PMAME v0.36 Beta 7 Released:
Rodimus Prime's PMAME v0.36 beta 7 has been released. PMAME is designed to be used with the Pentium classic and Pentium MMX CPU's. Download it from the M.A.M.E. section. Thanks to Dotmatrix for the news.

YourMom!:
In the spirit of Yahoo! comes YourMom!. The site is an exact copy of Yahoo!'s layout except it lists tons of YourMom! jokes in a nice categorized way (ala Yahoo!). When you find that special YourMom! joke, you can send it to a "friend" through their on-line postcard system. Here's a seasonal YourMom! yoke for you: "Your Mom's so ugly people go as her for Halloween." =) Thanks to Mame Fan for the link.

Site News:
The move to the new server went fairly smooth. 98.4% of everyone's DNS server is pointing to the new location and the remaining 1.6% should be updated in the next few days. The Official Rock Paper Scissors Strategy Guide:
Need some tips on winning that game of Rock Paper Scissors (aka Paper Scissors Stone) with your big brother? Then this is the site for you! Tons of tips, strategies, rules, FAQ and much more. An example of an advanced strategy is to act like you know what your opponents next move will be by making comments like:
  • "I knew that would be your next move",
  • "Rock? Hmmmm... Frankly I am surprised that Paper obviously didn't even occur to you.",
  • "This time, actually think before you throw."
  • "I don't suggest using the Avalanche gambit on me; I did invent it, after all."
  • ...and other comments of a similar tone.
Wow! Amazing... And all along I thought it was just a game of chance. =) Thanks to KidHype for the link.

Dave's Classics Gets a New Name:
Dave's Video Game Classics got a new name and a new domain. It's now called The Vintage Gaming Network (www.vg-network.com). I spoke with Dave last night and he confirms that it's just a name change and he still owns it. Basically, he recruited a staff to help him update the site, changed the site's focus, the site name, and the look and feel. However, it's still the same old Dave's Classics with a new "skin". I hope this creates some needed and well deserved free time for him. Everyone wish Dave good luck!

Cable Company Cut my Phone Line:
The good news is that the local cable company is installing their new 2-way high-bandwidth cable so I can finally have cable modem access. The bad news is that in the process, they cut my current phone and ISDN connection. This leaves me without my primary or backup internet connection :( No worry, I'm at my parent's house doing this update. Nothing much is happening right now, but I smell a new MAME release in the near future. They also should have my phone lines back up in the next few hours.
