New Arcade IRC Channel:
The new stomping ground of myself and other gaming fans is #arcade on EFnet. I'll be adding a
simple IRC client installation so anyone can get on-line to IRC EFnet in minutes. For the time
being, you can try your hand at it yourself using the above link to mIRC, probably the most
popular mIRC client.
Cheesy Classics:
Here's some cheesy versions of classic games. Megepede, Mortal Pong, and Cheesy Invaders.
While different then the original games, okay, they are cheesy versions of the original games,
they are still fun to play. The games are from the good old days of 320x240 VGA DOS graphics
and have minimum hardware requirements of the 386+ variety. Thanks to Dreamer for this retro
blast into the past with a cheesy turn.

New MAME Samples:
To get ready for the next MAME, make sure you download the required sound samples for Pole
Position and Turbo available on the M.A.M.E. section.
MAME Work in Process Info:
|
As if Pong and Pole Position isn't good enough, the next MAME beta should include a working
driver for Turbo! Other WIP news is that Qsound is now emulated (albeit a few problems) as well
as a few other driving games, most notably F1 GrandPrix Star. Check out a screen shot of Turbo
at the image link to the left.

D-BOY v0.55ap Released:
Another release by BouKiChi. This seems to be a very small update and has something to do
with lha and unzip (it's in Japanese, give me a break). =) Download it from the Console
Emulation section.
Rew v09LC Released:
Rew is a Windows GameBoy emulator written by BouKiChi (same author of D-BOY). The most I can
figure out what's new about this version is that it "Fixed multiple bugs". Download it
from the Console Emulation section.

Hi-Res M.A.M.E. Movie On-Line!
Dave Dries' M.A.M.E. movie now has a permanent home right here on Arcade@Home! The hi-res movie
is 320x240 in stereo and 29.8MB in size. The low-res 160x120 mono version is also still
available. I'll be adding a permanent link to the movies on the M.A.M.E. section. But for the
time being, you can download them at the above link. If you want to link to these movies,
please don't link to them directly because of their huge size. There's a link on the page that
you should use instead. Thanks.
OpenGL Asteroid Clone - "A Steroid":
While not emulation, Paolo Cignoni's "A Steroid" (Asteroid clone) is a remake of a retro classic.
It uses modern OpenGL graphics, music, and portability to run on multiple platforms (runs on
Windows and Linux currently). It's also very fun to play. Check out his site at the above link
or you can
download the game directly
(357k).
ClrMamePro RC1c Released:
Bogy has released his ClrMamePro release candidate 1c (RC1c). This version adds the following:
- added: multiple rebuilder sources support
- fixed: memory leak in unzip-inflating routine
- fixed: issue when using unzipped roms + games + check spelling

Download it from the M.A.M.E. section under Utilities
D-BOY v0.55a Released:
Another quick update by BouKiCHi of is great D-BOY GameBoy emulator. Like usual, I have no idea

Emulation section.
Turkey Food Coma & Shopping:
We did have leftovers, buy my wife nixed the idea of inviting you all over for leftovers =) The
Turkey coma set in and I can't remember the last time I slept that long. Of course, my wife
left at 6:00am to go Christmas shopping. Deals or not, what possesses people to shop today, it's
nuts out there.

bleem! v1.5b Released:
bleem! (the PSX emulator for Windows) gets a slight update today. This version includes the
following fixes/changes:
- Corrected a bug, which could cause bleem! to stop running mid-game
- Changed DirectX Error Message Logic for older 3D Hardware (Voodoo 1,2,Rush)
Download it from their site at the above link.
MAME 3D Animation and Soundtrack:
Here's a cool 3D animation and soundtrack for MAME. It's 3.3MB and only seems to work with
QuickTime set to Normal size. If you have QuickTime, download it at the above link and don't
forget to set it to Normal size or you'll just hear the soundtrack. I hear there's a 30MB
version of this movie as well. Thanks to Richard D. and Shayne for the news.
Happy Turkey Day!
Got a 30lb. tom in the fridge. If there are any leftovers, you're all invited over. =)

Unofficial MAME32 Updated:
P2L97 has updated his unofficial MAME32 with autofire to include the latest official MAME32
source. Download it from the M.A.M.E. section.
MacMAME v0.36 Beta 10b Released:
Another update for MacMAME. Seems they've had some problems with MacOS 9 crashing. They
hope this version has stopped the crashing. Download it from the M.A.M.E. section.
D-BOY v0.55:
D-BOY (a great GameBoy emulator) has been upgraded to version 0.55. What's new? Who knows?
Something about MBC3 and .TDF. Anyway, it's been converted to ZIP format and is available on
the Console Emulation section.
New Message Boards Open!
The old message boards have been updated with a new standard threaded design. I've done some
extensive modifications so it fits with the design of the site and cleans up the look and feel
a little. It records your IP address for security reasons but doesn't require you to sign in
each time so it's less cumbersome then others. Also, many new sections have been added. The
first person to post a message on each board gets a free copy of Arcade@Home! =) Check it out
at the above link.
ZSNES v0.986 Released:
For the time being, I've gotten around my connection problems. Not sure what's up, but I think
it's my ISP. Anyway, ZSNES v0.986 with both C and ASM cores have been updated. This version
includes the following:
- Re-added Sound Buffering. I was hoping to re-write it, but later found out that it wasn't worth the trouble.
- Fixed some Triple Buffering bugs, but I can't figure out that flicker glitch on NVidia cards
- Added Simulated Triple Buffering for cards without VESA 3.0 Hardware triple buffering. This method does some lose frames, but should be faster than v-sync. This only works on VESA 2.0 modes.
- Fixed up directory sorting to always put ./.. at the top.
Download it from the Console Emulation section.

Pole Position I & II Added to MAME!
|
Just a few days ago Pong! was added to MAME and today yet other game thought next to impossible
to emulate has been added. "Aaron Giles, Ernesto Corvi and Jürgen have submitted a fully
working Pole Position 1 / 2 driver, it only lacks explosion and screeching tires samples."
I'm sure the next beta release of MAME will include this most anticipated driver.
|
MESS v0.36 Beta 10 Released:
MESS (the Multiple Emulator Super System) has been updated to version 0.36 beta 10. MESS
emulates a "mess" of console systems. It also uses MAME's core (hence the version number match).
Download it from the Console Emulation section.
Virtual Boy v1.2 Released:
This new GameBoy emulator gets an update today which adds the following:
- Bug fixes in CPU core and HDMA
- New user interface: file save, reset, etc...
- Joystick support
- Fix in the DDraw code to allow screen switching
The author hopes for sound to be added in the next release. Download it from the Console
Emulation section.
MAXIM 2000 Remote:
Here's a new remote called the MAXIM 2000 (Girlfriend Remote). I wonder if there's a Wife
Remote model as well? Check it out at the above link. Thanks to Michael for the image.
PMAME v0.36 Beta 10 Released:
Rodimus Prime's PMAME v0.36 beta 10 has been released. This version is designed for the classic
Pentium or Pentium MMX (Pentium II/III/Celeron should use AMAME). Download it from the M.A.M.E.
section.
MacMAME v0.36 Beta 10a Released:
The Mac version of MAME had been updated to the v0.36 beta 10 core. Changes include:
- Fixed crashing bug with Pong. [Brad Oliver]
- Fixed issue where "Force 16-bit video" wasn't working. Note that not all drivers will render correctly if you force this depth, so report any oddities (we already know about Pong) to the appropriate places. [Brad Oliver]
- In sync with DOS beta 10. [Brad Oliver]
- Added some PPC assembly optimizations to the tms34010 core. [Aaron Giles]
- Fixed the workaround for RAVE video distortions under MacOS 9/OpenGL 1.1.2. [Brad Oliver]
- Added workaround for bug in InputSprocket 1.7.x and USB Gravis Gamepads. The 'dpad' need is broken on some USB devices (but not all), so I split it into 4 unique direction needs. [Brad Oliver]
- You can now set the creator type for the text files the reports generate. The default type is "R*ch" which is BBEdit. Find this by clicking on the "Options..." button in the front-end. [Brad Oliver]
- Many miscellaneous bug fixes and code cleanup. Additionally, the sample audit is disabled for this beta - it will return in the next release. [Brad Oliver]
Download it from the M.A.M.E. section.

for every MAME game. Also, visit the ROM Files section to see screen shots for just the latest
added games.

optional file provides Arcade@Home with game category and MAME version information. Download
it from the Front-Ends section.
Unofficial MAME32 v0.36 Beta 10 Released:
P2L97's unofficial MAME32 has been released. This version is not supported by the MAME team so
please don't contact them with any issues. Download it from the M.A.M.E. section.
AMAME v0.36 Beta 10 Released:
This AMD/PII/PIII/Celeron version of MAME created by Rodimus Prime has been updated. Download
it from the M.A.M.E. section.
Working MAME v0.36 Beta 10 Released:
I've fixed MAME so it no longer has a "crashing" problem with a particular command line
argument which was causing problems with the Arcade@Home front-end. I can't call it MAME
because I made some changes. Therefore, it's called "Working MAME". This is an unofficial
derivative version of MAME. The term Working MAME was only chosen because it now works with
Arcade@Home and other front-ends. Download it from the M.A.M.E. section.
Patch for MAME Beta 10:
Seems that MAME beta 10 messed up some reports that cause the front-end Arcade@Home and
probably others to fail when trying to update. Some have suggested this was done intentionally,
but I can't believe that's true. No fear, the above link is a file you can extract into the
Arcade@Home "Arcade" directory (should be in a sub directory off where Arcade.exe is). Just extract
this file on top of your existing files and everything will work normally. If it asks you to
search for new games, say no because it will fail if you say yes. I'm looking into this
further, but wanted to give everyone this quick-fix till there is a permanent one.

12 Million Visitor Mark:
Busting through the 12 million visitor mark anytime now. There's no prize for being visitor #
12 mil because in the past when I had a prize the poor counter died from the reloads :( Well,
Now that I'm on the new faster server, maybe I'll be able to give something away at the next
million visitor mark. Thanks to everyone who visits here on a regular basis.

MacMAME v0.36 Beta 9.1 Released:
MacMAME v0.36 beta 9.1 has been released. This version adds the following:
- In sync with DOS beta 9.1. [Brad Oliver]
- Many bug fixes to the reporting and audit code. [John Butler]
- You can now force 16-bit color for all games via a new checkbox in the video tab of the front-end. Note that doing so for games which use less than 256 colors will most likely cause a speed hit. Games which require 16-bit color will use 16-bit color regardless of the setting. [Brad Oliver]
- Added extremely tacky workaround for bugs in the ATi RAVE drivers in MacOS 9 and/or OpenGL 1.1.2. {Brad Oliver]
- Added keyboard shortcut for grabbing screenshots - Command-G. Thanks for George Warner for the suggestion. [Brad Oliver]
- Synced in some MESS-specific changes. [Dennis Munsie]

Tale of the $132 Dreamcast:
Guess what? I got my $132 Dreamcast in the mail today! They even
included a free NFL2K! That was $132 including shipping. Sure, I did
have to wait almost 2 months for it, but man, what a deal. Before you
get too excited, WhatsHotNow only offered this for a short time when
I ordered it. They no longer offer the DC console because of the
HUGE number of orders they got. However, you can get DC games at 33%
off including shipping which isn't bad.
D-BOY v0.54 Released:
D-BOY v0.54 has been released. Because it's in Japanese, I can't tell
you what's new, but I do know there's something about HuC3, MBC3, and
F10 (Quit & without save). Download it from the Console Emulation
section.

Official MAME v0.36 Beta 9.1 Released:
The official MAME v0.36 beta 9.1 has been released. This version adds some slight changes to
the TMS34010 emulation and changes the license agreement so derivative works are all but
disallowed. I haven't gone through the entire agreement yet, but it appears that little
changes that make using MAME faster and more enjoyable for users are no longer allowed. You
can download it from the M.A.M.E. section.

Pugsy has updated his MAME cheats. This release features 20,765 cheats for 1,770 games. It

MAME! v0.36 Beta 9.1 Released!
This is my enhanced version of MAME!. It adds the same new features as beta 8.2 of MAME! just using
the MAME beta 9 source. Please note that this version is NOT supported by MAMEDEV and you
should contact me with any problems with it. Also note that Nicola expressed that he didn't
want me releasing this build anymore, although it fully complies with the license agreement. I'll
probably setup a vote so the users can decide if I should continue this build or not. Until
then, you can download it from the M.A.M.E. section.

Sweet Site of the Day:
Want to be an employee of the largest non-profit organization in the world? That's the goal of
phester.org. Sounds
like a noble cause, so I'm an employee or phester.org as well. I think the company's slogan is
"sweet", but I'm not entirely sure. =) Anyway, visit and become an employee.
RetroFX Picures and Video!
|
RetroFX is another enhanced emulator like EmuDX or PacDX but this one emulates Ghosts'n Goblins.
Not only is there a sample image (click on the image to the left) there's also an animation of
the emulator in action. Two formats are provided,
RealVideo(550k) and
AVI(7.9M).
These really show of how good it looks and proves that it's a real product. For more picures

I,Robot Works in MAME!
The latest private MAME build supports I,Robot! And I smell a release in the next few days.
I,Robot was in MAME some time ago, but it didn't work so it was removed. Well, it's now back,
and playable. I,Robot fans rejoice. No promises if the driver will be included in the next
release of MAME.
EmuDX Private Beta:
Received the latest private beta of EmuDX (PacDX is the current release). This one included
some sound! However, it seems that Mike is having major problems with his internet connection
and therefore progress is going very slow. We probably won't see another release till after
the first of the year :( Wish Mike good luck. I hope his problems get sorted out, because
EmuDX is a great product.
TMS34010 CPU Speedup in MAME:
EmuViews
is reporting that the TMS34010 CPU core in MAME has got a major speed up. The TMS34010 drives
games like Mortal Kombat and Smash TV and others. If you have a Pentium 400+, it's very
possible that you will be running at full speed very shortly.

version adds:
- parser update for some retrocade datfiles

Download it from the M.A.M.E. section.
Midway Classics Coming to the Internet:
A few days ago I reported that Atari and Shockwave teamed up to release freely playable internet
versions of Super Breakout, Centipede, Frogger, and Missile Command. Well now it seems that
Midway will also be doing this with their classics. Dream reports that initially 10 titles will
be available including Defender, Joust, Spy Hunter, Moon Patrol and Marble Madness. You will
be able to download them and play at full screen. They'll "soon" be available on Shockwave's
site at the above link (as the press release reads). After 3 months, they'll also be
available on Midway's own website.
DOS Vectrex Emulator Hosted Locally:
The DOS Vectrex Emulator (DVE) site is now hosted locally. If you don't know about the Vectrex,
it was a very cool vector graphics console. Even better is that the manufacture has made the
game ROMs public domain so you can freely download them (they're even packaged with the
emulator). Check out the DVE site at the above link.
bleem! v1.5a Released:
bleem! gets a small update today. It corrects a bug that can cause bleem! v1.5 to lock up.
Changes include:
- Minor speed improvements
- Corrected bug in Emulation Logic (FF8 and others)
- Error messages for unsupported Direct3D 24- / 32-bit modes
Download it from the their site at the above link. Thanks to
Zophar for the news and
congratulations on his 3rd anniversary.

Three New Supported Consoles:
I added 3 new supported consoles: Intellivision, Atari Lynx, and Vectrex. There are 3 more
scheduled for tomorrow as well. Also, I'm converting the console pages over to a database
which will allow for faster updates and perfectly accurate information. I've converted about
50% so far and the rest should be converted tomorrow. What will you see differently? Not much
at the beginning, but it allows me to add new features with ease.
ArcadeOS v2.32 Released:
ArcadeOS is a great DOS only front-end for MAME and has been upgraded to v2.32. This version
adds MANY new feautes including:
- Extended Keyboard Remapper
- Added 'Start 1 + 2 = Escape' option

US Version of Speak & Spell Simulator:
What is this? Simulator Sunday? =) I got a private beta of the new US version of the Speak &
Spell Simulator. The current public release is the British version of the Speak & Spell and
I couldn't understand the speech nor spell the words "correctly" (to me color is not spelled
colour). =) This version corrects how words are pronounced and spelled to US english dialect.
Now I can let my son play with it. =) Anyway, the private beta needs the higher level words
resampled and it should be ready for a public release. Check out the above site for more
information.
IBM 650 Simulator:
This has got to be the most bizarre simulator to date. It simulates an IBM 650 magnetic drum
data-processing machine on your web browser (via Java). If you don't know what an IBM 650 is,
it's the old IBM punch card type computer (if your not old enough, you probably still don't
know what I'm talking about). In any case, it's VERY retro. I remember my father taking me to
the Bowling Green State University's computer lab to run programs on this monster. It was my
first computer experience and I vividly remember playing tic-tac-toe where the display was a
dot-matrix printer. It made a life-long impression on me. Thanks to rOlf $kywalker for the link.

New Episode of Back In Time:
The new episode of the Back In Time webcast has been posted. This episode marks the second anniversary of the Back In Time web site.
Many gaming companies have been jumping on the "classic gaming" bandwagon this year. Hasbro Interactive has been making use of their
Atari brand by re-releasing such titles as Pong, Tetris, and Missile Command.
This episode is very special, as it was recorded at the Atari offices located at Hasbro Interactive. My guest on this episode is Rich Cleveland,
the head of marketing for the Atari division of Hasbro Interactive. Rich and I discuss all of their new "classic" titles, including Q*Bert, Pong,
and the new 3D Arena Blast game which is based on the Unreal engine. Rich talks quite a bit about the creative process that goes into
recreating the classic games. He also goes into some detail on all of the projects that are in the works for next year. These titles have not been
announced publicly yet, and Back In Time has the EXCLUSIVE news. Can anyone say "Galaga?"
I also take a look at a few of the other "classic" games that have hit the store shelves over the last few months including Pac-Man World, and
Space Invaders. Finally, I cover some classic pinball machines that I have recently added to my collection.
Check it out at the above link.

Play Classics Using Your Browser:
|
Seems that Shockwave and Atari teamed up and created several classics that you can play using
your browser. They require Shockwave 7, but it's free to download. Games include Super Breakout,
Centipede, Frogger, and Missile Command. I played them and the are VERY true to the game. So
much so they almost look emulated. Check them out at the above link and check out the retro
picture on the left. Loverboy and headbands, hehe. Thanks to Jason Latimer for the news.

Tale of the $132 Dreamcast:
Remember that $132 Sega Dreamcast offer from What'sHotNow back on 9/23/99? Well, I got a
package in the mail today. No, it wasn't the Dreamcast but just NFL2K for the Dreamcast :( It
was a good deal at only $33 including shipping, but doesn't do me much good without the console.
They included a free pack sour gummi worms (Sqwigglies) in the package so it wasn't all bad.
If I ever get the Dreamcast, I'll let you know.
Two New Hosted Sites:
Two new hosted sites were added today. Rodimus Prime's
PentuiMAME
(home of AMAME and PMAME) and P2L97's
Unofficial MAME32 with AutoFire
(which gets released about a day or less after the DOS version of MAME). Welcome them aboard.

Athlon 900 MHz Released:
If you haven't heard of KryoTech before, they design CPU cooling systems that allow CPUs to run
at higher speeds. We are not talking fans here, but a compressor that cools the CPU down to
around -40°C. AMD even officially endorses their technology including this 900MHz Athlon. A
case with the cooling compressor, motherboard, and CPU is $2200. This unit is a few weeks old,
but I'm sure that a 1GHz model will be released shortly with Athlon 750 just around the corner.
Thanks to Madjock for the news.

New Microsoft Keyboard:
Microsoft today released a radical new keyboard that trims down the number of keys to just the
ones used most often. Some claim that the keys on this keyboard are the only ones they ever
use while running Windows 98. Shown was the PS/2 version, but a USB model is also available.
Check it out at the above link. Thanks to Mame Fan for the image.

Updated Catver.ini Released:
An updated catver.ini file has been released which adds the new MAME v0.36 beta 8 games. The
catver.ini file adds game category and version information to the Arcade@Home front-end.
Because MAME doesn't store this information, it's an external file. It's not in any way
required to run Arcade@Home. Download it from the Front-Ends section. Thanks again to Gerardo
for the file.

MAME! v0.36 Beta 8.2 Released:
MAME! is my enhanced version of MAME which adds a few features to make MAME more enjoyable.
This version adds two enhancements:
- Uses the beta 7 fileio.c because it verifies ROMs about 10 times faster then the beta 8 fileio.c does. The -verifyroms * command is once again VERY fast.
- Corrected the -verifyroms * so it searches for missing merged clones. This modified report now appears to work 100%
Please note that this is NOT the official version of MAME and you should NOT bug MAMEDEV
about it. Download it from the M.A.M.E. section.
Redump v2.3 Released:
This version supports the conversion of the Neo-Geo game "Sengoku" to just dumped MVS format.
No need to download the entire game again, just convert it with this tool. Download it from
the M.A.M.E. section. Thanks to
SYS2064 for the file.
