Emulator Being Forced to a Name Change:
There's an emulator out there that's being forced to change it's name by Nintendo. Seems that Nintendo don't like it when people use the Pokemon character, name, and make jokes about sex crimes in conjunction with Pokemon. But, can you blame Nintendo for that? Many, including myself, have been telling them to change the name for weeks now. It's no surprise to me that this happened. Oh well, maybe something good will come out of this.

OpenGlide v0.05 Released:
OpenGlide is a Glide wrapper designed to allow you to play Glide games (namely UltraHLE) when you don't have a Voodoo video card. DGen v1.21 was released. This version adds the following:
  • Switched to Richard Mitton's excellent RAZE Z80 emulator, which fixes the out of time music on some games. Most of you described the problem as 'the music isn't in sync with the game'. Anyway, this is now fixed.
  • Sonic1/2/3, Aladdin are all fine now. I imagine there will be others. Eternal Champions's music is okay and you can play the game with Musashi.
  • DAC sound plays at the right pitch now (e.g. 'Sega' chord, 'Eswat' speech)
Download it from the Console Emulation section.

Rodimus Prime's Versions of EmuDX:
Rodimus Prime is now compiling EmuDX in his typical fashion. AEmuDX is optimized for PII/AMD/486 CPU's and PEmuDX is optimized for the Pentium classic CPU. If you don't know what EmuDX is, it's an emulator that updates the graphics and sound effects of the classic arcade games: Donkey Kong, Frogger, Galaxian, Ms. Pacman and Pacman. It looks almost like a new game, but the same emulated classic game is at its core. Download EmuDX from the Arcade Emulation section.

EmuDX v1.0 Released!
Go get it from the Arcade Emulation section. Don't forget to the the DX files for each game, they are required.

Start downloading now and I'll update when the binary is ready.

New, Larger, Better M.A.M.E. Screen Shot Browser:
The on-line M.A.M.E. screen shot browser had a complete rehaul. It how has cleaner screen shots in GIF format instead of the old JPG format. Also, the screen shots are much larger (sometimes up to 640x480) and automatically scale to fit the window but still keep the correct aspect ratio. It should also be faster to view then other sites because of technical server/html details that I don't want to bore everyone with. =) It will also be updated with each MAME release. Anyway, check it out at the above link.

MameLang32 Hosted at Arcade@Home:
MameLang32 is an unofficial compile of MAME32 that includes multi-language support including English, Spanish, Japanese and Portuguese. It's now also hosted here at Arcade@Home. Check it out at the above link and don't forget to change your bookmarks.

2,000 New Servers for Arcade@Home?:
As of today, Arcade@Home is Akamaized and served on a global network of 2,000 servers in 40 countries. If you haven't heard of Akamai, you're not alone. But, you've probably heard of sites that use Akamai: Yahoo!, Apple, CBS, GO Network, Looksmart, Monster, Nasdaq, Lycos and many other high profile companies. What does it do? When you connect to Arcade@Home, you're actually downloading from the closest and fastest Akamai server near you. Why is this good? If you're in England, you load content from the Akamai server in England instead of the US, this speeds up access, frees up server resources, and helps to cut down total internet traffic. If you notice anything strange with the site, please let me know.

Xmame v0.36 Beta 15.1 Released:

I-PAC Arcade Interface:
Do you want to build your own control panel or arcade cabinet but don't want to pay $100 for a Hagstrom encoder or the problems when hacking a keyboard or joystick? Well, you may want to give I-PAC a look. It's a keyboard encoder just like the Hagstrom models except it's only $39 plus shipping. It supports up to 4 buttons for two joysticks and he's working on an 8 buttons per joystick model as well as spinner and USB support. Because it uses the keyboard port, it works with DOS emulators perfectly. Take a look at I-PAC at the above link.

Snes9x v1.29 Released:
Another updated of arguably the best SNES emulator Snex9x. Version 1.29 adds the following:
  • Disabled the SPC700 noise feature simulation used by Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 3 until I work out why its being triggered by sound effects that don't use it.
  • Rewrote/reorganised the DirectX and 3D/fx handling code, now both are never enabled at the same time in Snes9X. It might fix the crashing problems some Window port users are seeing. Changing between DirectX and Voodoo 3D/fx modes now requires Snes9X t o be restarted.
  • Tracked down and fixed the Chrono Trigger black screen problem on the Windows port: a rogue asm instruction was left in by mistake after some code edits - it was only by chance that the code worked on the Linux port.
  • Added some SNES debug options to the Windows port, but disabled by default, on the shipped version.
  • Clicking on the column headings in the OpenROM dialog in the Windows port now sorts by that column; plus added some slight screen update optimisations.
  • Added an optimisation to graphics rendering: don't add or subtract sub-screen from background layers, or clear the sub-screen, if SNES fixed colour is black and no background layers are enabled on sub-screen, even if ROM tries to enable translucency effects for every background layer. Discovered Sonic was doing this, there will be others.
  • Forgot to enable auto S-RAM save on Windows port, oops!
Download it from the Console Emulation section.

NESten v0.6 Beta 8 Released:
Another update of this fine NES emulator. This release adds the following:

New Episode of Back In Time:
Mike Stulir e-mailed the following news about the latest Back in Time Episode:
  • This is certainly the longest (and hopefully the best) episode to date, as I have a TON of great guests crammed into one show. The episode was recorded at the Coronation Day Championship video game tournament on January 8th & 9th. The event was sponsored by Twin Galaxies -- The Official Video Game & Pinball World Records scoreboard. The event was held at Funspot in Weirs Beach, New Hampshire. Funspot has what is probably the largest collection of MINT condition classic coin-op video games. The arcade at Funspot has over 500 coin-op games. Roughly 125-150 of them are classic games like Donkey Kong, Tron, etc.
  • Walter Day from Twin Galaxies talks a bit about the Twin Galaxies web site and world record book. The rest of the guests are the "who's who" of video game players. They include Billy Mitchell, the first person to get a perfect score in Pac-Man. Also joining me is Ben Gold, the winner of the North American Video Game Olympics, which was held on the old "That's Incredible" TV series in early 1983.
Check it out at the above link.

AOL & Time Warner Join Forces:
This is bound to upset your stomach. AOL, Warner Bros., Time, CNN, and HBO all as one company. Get ready for that busy signal trying to connect to your Warner cable service or HBO. As Shane Monroe said "I never thought I'd hear myself say anything positive about Microsoft, but I would MUCH rather have M$ own the world than AOL." I have to agree with that. I'd rather have my toaster crash every 15 minutes from a flaky Microsoft OS then hear "You've got toast". Here's a tidbit from the CNN news article:
"The union, the largest corporate merger in history, creates a combined company immediately boasting a market capitalization of $350 billion."
If you're not sick yet from this news, maybe you can read the entire story at the above link. Thanks to Brian D. for the news.
