Interesting Raine Message
Not really sure what this message means on the official Raine page. If you search on the left-hand side of their front page, you'll find the following message:

speaking of which, we are not affiliated with the b0rg collective hosted on emulation world.
It sounds like someone doesn't like the b0rg collective. Star Trek reference or maybe something else? You decide. Check it out at the above link. Thanks to Geoshock for the heads up.

Developers Unimpressed with PS2
It seems that the Sony PS2 ain't all that and a bag of chips like Sony would like you to believe. Developers are now coming forward and expressing their frustrations and disappointments. While some of the games may look good, it's very hard to develop for the platform and it's not as fast as Sony claims. Therefore, they can't design games in the way they intended. Konami's Hideo Kojima (creator of the Metal Gear series) was interviewed by MSNBC and made the following statements:
MSNBC: Is it hard to take Metal Gear into this close-up 3-D environment?

Kojima: When PlayStation 2 was first announced, Sony said you could get Hollywood movie graphics quality, and that is true. But if we tried to create Metal Gear Solid 2 trying to maintain that quality of graphics throughout the game we cannot do it.

If you take a game like Tekken Tag (a fighting game from Namco) where you have only two models and rendered backgrounds, you can probably do it. But with Metal Gear Solid and its 3-D environment, you just cannot do it.

MSNBC: Did you have any idea you could get such great graphics out of PlayStation 2?

Kojima: I was actually expecting something much better, and we were not getting what we expected. In the early days I really dreaded going to work because I knew we were not going to get what we expected.
It's not looking good for Sony and the PS2. A Namco producer was also quoted as saying that they were displeased with the quality of Tekken Tag Tournament because of development problems. Add to that a few developers are threatening to jump ship if Sony doesn't fix some hardware problems (like anti-aliasing and low video RAM). To add insult to injury, developers of Nintendo's Dolphin are saying that the Dolphin platform is wonderful to develop on and gives them the speed they need. Also, Konami and Nintendo are working very closely together on Dolphin development.

So, while Metal Gear Solid on the PS2 may seem impressive at first, the actual game play isn't as impressive. And, with Konami's anger towards Sony and their PS2, it's very likely that you'll be seeing Metal Gear Solid for the Nintendo Dolphin and it will kick the crap out of the PS2 version. Still, I'm sure the Sony PS2 will sell very well, but the Dolphin and Microsoft's X-Box now seem like major competition for Sony.

Advance MAME v0.37 Beta 2.1?
I've seen people talking about this new derivative version of MAME. However, I haven't added it here because it violates the MAME license. VII. Derivative Works reads: "The version number must also match the number of the official MAME version from which you derived your version." I believe this is another example of a silly rule put in place so others can't build a better MAME. But anyway, while I think it's a stupid rule, it's in the license and EVERYONE needs to follow it. I hope everyone using this version of MAME will stop until they are in-line with the MAME license.

More Dragon's Lair 3D News
As I said yesterday, I was hoping to get additional information on Blue Byte's new Dragon's Lair 3D. 17 years ago, Dragon's Lair was one of the most innovative video games which secured its place as one of only 3 video games to be displayed at the Smithsonian Institution. This new version is in a 3D world and allows it to be the adventure game it couldn't be in 1983.

Features of Dragon's Lair 3D include:
  • A massive lair with 16 unique areas, dozens of rooms, puzzles and traps along with some familiar faces ensures Dragons' Lair 3D (TM) brings adventure gaming at its best to old and new fans!
  • Choose and collect new items, weapons or potions along the way!
  • A special magical medallion will guide Dirk through the tough times!
  • New enemies include over 30 creatures for Dirk to deal with!
  • Full character control. Dirk is in your hands as you have the ability to make him run, jump, roll, sneak, climb, crouch, crawl, swing, push, lift and somersault!
  • Dirk's bungling but loveable personality features a hilarious assortment of over 150 new animations!
And don't forget to check out the screen shots! [ 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 ] And this bonus animation!

Site of the Week
This is my new favorite site. It's a site devoted to a group of people that will never be able to see it, the Amish. If you don't know anything about the Amish, for religious reasons, they don't use any type of electricity nor modern convinces like cars, TV, computers, cable modems, etc. Just seems kind of ironic to me. It's a slow day, so check it out at the above link.

E3 Pictures and News

E3 was a great time with lots of great new games to sample and see. A few noteworthy classics to mention are an arcade collection to be released by Sega which includes Hang-On and Space Harrier (both which seem to be emulated). Another one is Dragon's Lair 3D to be released by Blue Byte. It looks just like Dragon's Lair, but is done in a 3D domain where you can explore anywhere in the 3D world instead of the pre-set moves of the normal Dragon's Lair (I may have some additional information on this shortly). Here are some of my pics from E3.

Ph33r Planet Alignments
Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Earth & the moon are all aligned today. You won't be able to see this because all the planets are aligned on the other side of the Sun. Does this mean it's the end of the world because of tidal forces or something? Probably not, the other 8 planets together with all their moons have only one five-thousandth the pull of the Sun, which is only 47.6% that of the moon (the primary reason for tides). Although, people have been acting strange around here today and my cable modem is out, so you never know. Thanks to my resident star gazer Exodus3D for the heads up. And check out the above link for more information from NASA.

Love Letter Virus Alert
Normally, I don't like to report on things like this. But this virus has been confirmed and is quickly spreading. The company I work for has shut down their Outlook system for the entire day so they can purge the system of the virus. It's infected the Pentagon, the federal Department of Agriculture, the Florida Lottery, the Wisconsin Legislature, Britain痴 House of Commons, Time Warner Inc., E-Trade.com, and MANY other companies and government offices around the world. If you get an e-mail with the subject "ILOVEYOU" and/or an attachment of "LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.TXT.vbs" don't open it, delete it and delete it from your trashcan as well. Here's some of the things it does:
  • The worm spreads itself by generating an e-mail like described above, attaching itself and send that e-mail to all recipients in all Outlook address books. In big organizations the volume of e-mail generated has the potential to overload e-mail servers.
  • It searches through the all subdirectories and overwrites all files with the extensions JPG, VBS, JS, JSE, CSS, WSH, SCT, HTA, MP3, MP2 with its own copy and adding the extension VBS. A file called Satisfaction.MP3 would become Satisfaction.MP3.VBS. Next time the affected file is clicked or activated the worm will start.
Symantec's site (maker of Norton Anti-Virus) is being hit so hard with people trying to get a patch, you can't even access their site. The above link is for Computer Associates' InoculateIT (a free anti-virus program) who's web site is currently accessible and have a fix for this virus. If you're using Outlook, get protected.
