The excellent Java arcade emulator JAE has now added support for Irem's motorcycle game from 1983 called Traverse USA.
Play it on-line on Norbert Kehrer's site at the above link.
More MAME Goodies
If you've heard on other sites about the "new" Mortal Kombat II hacks that should be included in the next release of MAME,
they are available on the ROM Files section as they have been since the 6th of September. I guess they are just new to
some people =)
Vintage Gaming
I'm sure everyone is wondering why VintageGaming is down. I talked with Dave on the phone and they're having some kind of
server problem that's affecting most GameFan sites (including gamefan.com). It sounds quite severe and and it may be down
for a few more hours. Stay tuned for more news, there WILL be more news on this.
Jagulator v1.3.1a Released
No, it doesn't play any games yet, but it was released to show that it's a real product. It displays the boot screen but
does NOT play any games. Please read the readme file and only e-mail the author if you have something nice to say.
Download it from the Console Emulation section and thanks to
EmuGaming for the news.

Virtual Game Station Demos
My e-mail requests to Connectix have finally been answered! You can now download a demo version of their Playstation
emulator for the Mac and Windows. Best of all, there isn't a time limit on demo play! Here's what is disabled in the demo version:
- Virtual Memory Cards
- 2-Player Support
- Game Pad Support
Just a day after I went off on the PCSX/FPSE lameness, the big dog PSX emulator releases this gem. Download the demo
from the Playstation section to try out how good this emulator really is. Then buy it, well worth it.

No PSX/N64 News?
Many people have asked why I haven't posted any PSX or N64 emulator news. Most of you know what I'm talking about, the
canceling (for the 3rd or 4th time) of UltraHLE, the PCSX/FPSE cat fight, etc. Anyway, none of that crap seems like news
to me. For example, to me, UltraHLE has been dead for a year and a half (only the first version was ever released). We all
know what those screen shots were worth now. As far as the PCSX/FPSE crapola goes, who cares. Either they release a new
version or someone else will release a better emulator, big deal. Actually, IMHO, Virtual Game Station is better than every
other PSX emulator put together, so who cares what the bottom feeders do. Anyway, I didn't feel any of this was news
worthy, but I had to say something because of all the e-mail I was getting asking why I didn't report on it. Simply put, I
didn't report on it because I don't feel that it's news. Now stop the e-mails =) Oh, and FPSE closed again. Who's keeping
score on how many times each emulator author has quit? I've lost count. Now go play some games or something.
MAME Needed Soon
Getting itchy waiting for the next MAME release? Get ready for it on these slow days by visiting the ROM Files section

Final Burn v0.021 Released
I don't know what's up with the author of the arcade emulator Final Burn, but it's been 5 days since his last update (what
a slacker! ;-) Here's what he's been doing for the past 5 days:
- Adjusted the sensitivity of the joystick. You should now get better accuracy in aiming, but you have to try harder to do a barrel roll now (which should be more like the arcade).
- Improved the way input and pausing is done
- Fixed the keyboard input so that it slides the analog stick at the same rate, no matter what the frame rate is like.
Download it from the Arcade Emulation section.

z26 v1.39 Released
z26 is the best Atari 2600 emulator for DOS (it also works on Windows machines obviously). This version includes the following:
- Starpath multiload support has been added. You must concatenate the .bin files similarly to other emulators to play multiloads. A command like this will do the trick:
copy /b load1.bin+load2.bin+load3.bin+load4.bin mload.bin
then run mload.bin in the emulator.
- Added a new Starpath bios that shows the vertical blue progress bars any time you load a Starpath game or go to the next load in a multiload game.
- Added support for the 6144 byte Starpath format so that the 6K version of Cubis that is floating around the net now plays.
- Changed super-chip detection scheme. If the RAM area has all $00 or $ff in it, z26 turns on super-chip support automatically. Now developers can work on super-chip games without having to use the -g command line switch.
- Thanks to Eckhard Stolberg for the nice Starpath support and the new super-chip detection scheme.
- Added some features to trace mode so that real addresses are shown for indexed accesses. Thanks to Thomas Jentzsch for help with this.
- Fixed bug in the GUI to allow the complete maximum number of ROMs to be displayed (693). Thanks to Michael Walden Jr. for this fix.
- Fixed a small mouse related bug in the GUI.
- Re-vamped video support. Video mode 5 is now the default and the vertical position of games is now adjusted automatically. If you wish to turn off automatic positioning, simply press PgUp or PgDn to do positioning manually.
- PAL games are now detected automatically. A game is run for a few frames and if it is a PAL game (lots of scanlines), the video mode is automatically switched to a PAL mode (if you've enabled it with the -5 command line switch), and the PAL palette is turned on.
- Fixed what is hopefully the final Windows compatibility issue. Some rare system crashes that happened when exiting z26 no longer occur.
Download this best of breed emulator from the Console Emulation section.

Atari 2600 Portable!
|
Whoa! And I thought I was a nut for building an arcade cabinet around a PC to play MAME. This guy built his own portable
Atari 2600! And it looks almost like Atari itself designed it. You can check out a bunch of pictures by clicking
on the image to your left. Or, take a look at this video of the VCSp in action!
I'm floored. Check out his site at the above link and thanks to Exodus3D for the news.

More Retro-Remakes
A new retro remake is available at an obvious location: Retro-Remakes.
This time it's a very cool remake of Space Invaders. Now while there are many Space Invader remakes, there are none quite
like this. Think of Space Invaders meets Tempest. It's a 3D vector graphics version called XInvaders 3D. It's very cool
and very fun to play. Both Windows and DOS versions are available from the Retro-Remakes site at the above link. While
you're there, browse his hundreds of other remakes for many different systems all nicely organized.

Laser v0.11a Released
It seems like there's a competition among emulator authors to see who can release the most updates the quickest. I had
thought that Final Burn had the championship locked up, but today I learned that Laser got two updates IN THE SAME SECOND!
Laser v0.11 was released at 5:02:44 AM and then Laser v0.11a at 5:02:44 AM as well! Amazing! Lets see if Final Burn can
top that. v0.11a of Laser includes the following:
- Sound is enabled with -sound now.
- 4 Player Bowling is now playable (with graphics errors).
- Space Invaders now features complete sound. Somehow I missed the saucer sound - I don't know how I did that - but it's in there now.
Download Laser from the Arcade Emulation section.
NMAME32 v10 Released
NMAME32 is a Neo-Geo only build of MAME32 compiled by BlackBox. Download it from the Console Emulation section under
Ne-Geo.
Final Burn v0.019 Released
No, the news script isn't in a loop and no, you're not in some cruel Time Warp Redundancy I saw once on "Dr. Who", it's been another 12 hours so
of course there's been 3 new releases of the Final Burn emulator. Since the last release posted here a few hours ago, here's what's new:
- Fixed the engine sound - it was to do with looping samples. I also increased the accuracy of the PCM emulation - the Vulcan gun now sounds better I think.
- Blanked out the incorrect engine sound, to save our poor ears for the time being...
- Changed the scanlines method (to avoid vertical banding effects on cards which do bilinear filtering).
You may want to download it now from the Arcade Emulation section, or just wait 15 minutes for v0.022 =) And for those that don't know,
"Dr. Who"
was a very cool very low budget sci-fi TV show made by the BBC and showed on PBS here and was originally aired from 1963-1989.
Interesting is that the main character was played by 8 different actors! Anyway, enough with my Dr. Who rant =)

ClrMamePro v1.8a Released
Not sure why I didn't get an e-mail from Mr. Roman Scherzer, but his ClrMamePro was updated to v1.8a yesterday. This release fixes the following:
- fixed: wrong displayed fastscan progressbar
- fixed: rare number-of-system-displaying-problems
- fixed: rare crash when using a non-mame-engine and dropping files in scan-results window
Download it from the MAME Utilities menu.
Final Burn v0.016 Released
It's been 12 hours so you know what time it is? Time for another Final Burn release of course =) This version adds
a fullscreen with scanlines option. Download it from the Arcade Emulation section and thanks to Mr. Paranoid for the news.
What's this?
Hmmm... What is that? And what's this also?
Okay, now give me a good reason to continue doing this. Maybe retro remixes? Your e-mails with ideas will be welcome.
Classic Gamer Magazine
Classic Gamer Magazine just celebrated its one year anniversary. While this isn't in itself a big deal in itself, the fact that
all Tower Records worldwide will carry this quarterly full-color magazine is! You can not get the magazine designed for
"us" locally for $4.00, how cool. Visit their site at the above link.
Reissue of Ms.Pac-Man/Galaga?
Word is that Namco will release a combo cabinet that will include both Ms.PacMan and Galaga in the same unit. The monitor
is said to be a 25" model but it's not known if it will be mounted horizontal or vertical. It's designed to be an
20th anniversary re-release of these games and the cabinets are going out the door at $3,499.99 plus shipping. It's unclear as to what
hardware is inside these cabinets. Is it a modern remake of the old mainboard or is it emulator based? I guess we'll know
soon enough. Thanks to ArcadeXcitement for the news.

MAME WIP Madness!
Okay, it seems that certain MAME team members have gone mad, specifically Takahiro Nogi and his Mahjong drivers. Most
westerners wouldn't call Mahjong "games" games at all, but they must have their following somewhere. Anywhere, here's what's new:
- September 16th, 2000: David Graves abstracted the Taito YM2610 sound interface. Jürgen Buchmüller sent in a preliminary Z180 emulation core. Yochizo added Balloon Brothers, Gigandes and Daisenpu to the Superman a.k.a. Taito X driver. Takahiro Nogi sent in a huge batch of Mahjong drivers, with support for the following games: [

NeoPocott v0.35b2 Released
NeoPocott (Neo-Geo Pocket emulator for Windows) was updated to version 0.35b2 (private). However, the author has given
NGPWORLD premission for the
public to try it out and report back to him problems that they may have. The author's e-mail address is [email protected]
Download it from the Console Emulation section.
Thief & NATO Def. Samples
Thanks to the work of Dremscape, the Thief and NATO Defense samples are now less than half the size they were before!
(4.7MB and 5.4MB) Dremscape found that the audio track repeated and cropped the samples. Then I ran the resulting
samples through some noise filtering software to clean it up a bit and boosted one sample by 3dB to increase the volume.
The result is a much smaller file that should work on systems with limited RAM and they sound cleaner as well. Download
them from the MAME Sound Samples page at the above link.

New ROM Sections
What a slow day... So slow that Bob from Arcade Emulation added 6 new ROM sections: Lynx, HiVE, m72, System 16, Shark, and Sparcade.
He's also changing the look and feel a bit but isn't done yet so some sections may look a little different than others.
He also mentioned something about 3 new sections he was working on as well. Go Bob... Go Bob... Go Bob... =) Check it out
on the ROM Files section.
Styx & Galaxian Remakes
The excellent site Retro-Remakes
has two new game additions sure to rock your retro side:
- It's a remake of the ZX Spectrum classic 'Styx' (originally written by the immortal Matthew Smith of Manic Miner & Jet Set Willy fame). The remake is a very good remake indeed and was written by Neil Walker of the RetroSpec team. The remake captures all of the charm (and playability) of the original version and includes a level editor!. It comes in DOS & Windoze formats and the source code is available for download too!
- John Dow & John Blythe have released a cool Galaxians remake (with Llama's) :) called Galyaksians...
You can download these and hundreds of others at Retro-Remakes.
NMAME32 v8 Released
NMAME32 is a Neo-Geo only version of MAME for Windows. Because his site has been taken down by Tripod, this could be his
final release. Download it from the Console Emulation section under Neo-Geo. Thanks to
vgn for the news.

Retro Video
I read on Retrogames about
a cool Atari 2600 based video with a slick soundtrack. It downloaded slowly so I figured I'd mirror it locally (and I've
got a big 10Mbps pipe that's not at all near maxed out). Atila stated the video is from
GamersOnline, but the
site hasn't been available so I can't confirm the source of this video. Play it at the above link (warning, it's 7MB).
ClrMamePro v1.8 Released
Roman Scherzer's ClrMamePro (ROM manager for MAME and other emulators) has been updated to v1.8. New in this release includes:
- misc: External engine/bios definitions. ClrMamePro doesn't use any hardcoded engine or bios definitions anymore. All needed information can be found in an external file 'engine.cfg'. Scanmodes and rebuildermodes have been changed, too. You can't choose between 'arcade, both and neogeo only' anymore. Instead you have to check the biossets you want to check. Same for rebuilder. If using this cmpro for the first time, you have to check our current parserengine settings.
- misc: activating missing-check will automatically activate name-check, too.
- misc: missing bios sets will be listed.
- misc: useless clones in full merge mode will be listed (set + unneeded has to be activated)
- misc: reporting of share-violation errors
- misc: changed scanner a bit (faster, p/c orientated)
- misc: thread priority updated
- fixed: menus in output window
- removed: rebuild always option. This option is now disabled by default
Download it from the M.A.M.E. Utilities section at the above link.
iMAME v0.5 Released
MAME for the Ipaq Windows CE 3.0 palm PC has been updated to v0.5. Here's what's new:
- More drivers...Mappy, DigDug2, Dkong, Bagman.
- Added "GameInfo" dialog...shows you what Roms/Samples are needed and available. A '+' indicates that the file was found in the Mamebin directory.
- Changed sample subsystem back to using the proprietary SAM format. Dig out your old .SAM files! I will consider posting my collection, does someone have the SAMs for Qbert?
- Changed the Keys...thanks to 999 for pointing out that the middle joypad position is not subject to the Stop-n-Shoot crap.
- Put the framerate display as an option on the UI.
- A couple of simple changes to common.c, so that you can put your roms in a directory "roms". On the handheld, this must be absolute directory "/mameroms/"...put your samples in "/mamebin/" as well. On the desktop, this can be relative to the current working directory for the iMame executable.
Download it from the M.A.M.E. section.

D-BOY v0.70 Released
D-BOY is a GameBoy emulator for DOS that has been updated to v0.70. I'm sure this release does some excellent things but
their what's new listing is still corrupted and just shows characters in the extended character set. Also, the archive was
in a wacky LZH format that was abandoned in all parts of the world no fewer than 5 years ago, so it was converted to a
ZIP file so more than one person could expand the archive. Download it from the Console Emulation section.
CatVer.ini v0.37b7
The CatVer.ini file has been updated to add the latest MAME v0.37 beta 7 games. Download it from the Front-Ends section.
Thanks to Inkochnito for the file.

MAME WIP
My little buddy Gridle made some MAME WIP
updates for the past several days:
- September 8th, 2000: Mike Haaland added an alternative mazes version of NATO Defense. Aaron Giles sent in a new TMS34010 core with a few bugfixes, and finally officially sent the Hard Drivin' / S.T.U.N. Runner driver. The latter is perfect, while the former suffers from no sound and a nasty bug causing the car physics go out of control after a crash. Also included was a preliminary Race Drivin' driver, which unfortunately goes weird as soon as the simulation begins. Aaron also added a new debugger feature to compare CPU core timings. Nicola Salmoria fixed the Return of Invaders driver to use the 68705 emulation correctly instead of relying on a protection hack.
- September 7th, 2000: Stephane Humbert added dip switches to the PlayChoice 10 driver. Phil Stroffolino sent in the Namco NA-1 driver, still supporting Cosmo Gang the Puzzle, Tinkle Pit and Emeraldia. Andrea Mazzoleni fixed a memory trashing bug in the cheat system.
- September 6th, 2000: Brad Oliver fixed a small bug in the CCPU core. Jürgen Buchmüller wrote a helpful tool for adding new CPU cores.
- September 5th, 2000: Manuel Abadia fixed some of the priority problems in Big Karnak. Ernesto Corvi and Nicola Salmoria wrote a driver for Buggy Challenge, though a lot of it is still preliminary. Mike Greve added two new revisions of Mortal Kombat 2 to the T-Unit driver.
- September 4th, 2000: Nicola Salmoria fixed a bug in the C 68k core which affected Zwackery.
- September 3rd, 2000: Brad Oliver sent in yet another dirty functions' update. Bryan McPhail fixed an internal timer bug in the Hu6280 core.
- September 2nd, 2000: Nicola Salmoria fixed a 6309 bug which affected Fast Lane and Double Dragon. Brad Oliver abstracted the dirty handling from Centipede and sped up Atari Tetris.
- September 1st, 2000: Mathis Rosenhauer further implemented the integration of backdrop functions to the artwork functionality. Phil Stroffolino sent in a tilemap update with largely reworked internals, so not many games work with it yet. Jürgen Buchmüller sent in a huge CPU core update with a lot of new CPU cores included.
Check out the screen shots at the above links via the new image browser.

to download that from the same page as well. Thanks to John, who uploaded the WOW samples using the new Donate feature on
the ROM Files section. In summary, download the new MAME Samples for Thief, NATO Defense, and Wizard of War. Enjoy it now!

driver. It's looking like this driver will be included in the next release of MAME.

Final Burn v0.011 Released
Slow day today, but at least we have two releases of the Final Burn emulator. This version includes the following over v0.009:
- Fixed a crash if DirectSound fails for any reason. If you don't have a sound card installed, and previously couldn't play After Burner, this should fix the problem.
- Fixed palette in 555 16-bit modes (typo!). If you had incorrect colors in 16-bit modes, this should fix it.
- By the way, in 8-bit modes Final Burn will have incorrect colors: you should change your desktop settings to 16-bit or higher.
- Added 44100hz and Bass filter options (which I advise you only use on a high-end Pentium 3).
Download it from the Arcade Emulation section.

or libraries from the official Sega development kit, known as Katana. Download it from the Console Emulation section.
Also, if anyone from Sega is out there, let me know your feelings on the legality of this emulator.

Free your RAM
Mike B. informed me of an excellent and free tool called MaxMem by AnalogX. If you're
running Windows 9x you know that it can eat memory till you run out an need to reboot. Well,
this tool frees unused memory. On this micro laptop that I'm using right now I only have 64MB
of RAM and it reported that only 5MB was free. However, after running (which only took a couple
seconds) I had 15MB free. Quite impressive. Anyway, check it out at the above link and maybe
you won't have to reboot as often.
After Burner Front-End
If you're having problems running the other games supported by the After Burner Emulator, Darren
Wall has written a Front-End for the emulator. It's a small 5k download so check it out on the
Arcade Emulation section.
Arcade@Home Chat
The Arcade@Home Chat is now functional and is no longer in beta testing. I still want to
add additional features, but it's now solid to communicate on. I'm adding several new features including:
- Webcam support - Users will be able to optionally show their webcam while communicating
- Private messages - Sending non-public messages to a particular user
- File transfers - Send a file to another user or users
Please note that it doesn't work with Netscape 4.7x and prior because of the lack of
support for iframes (Netscape 6 works however). Also, you need JavaScript and session cookies
in order for it to work correctly. Microsoft IE users won't have any problems with a default
setup. Try it out at the above link. When I'm on the computer, I'm also on the chat.
Arcade Trivia Game
Last month's Arcade Trivia Game
is over, but this months has just started. Win yourself a Dreamcast or a $250 buy.com
shopping spree. I'll be selecting the winners of last month's qualifiers later today so keep
an eye on your mailbox. Play the Arcade Trivia Game
at the above link.

If you haven't heard, the After Burner Emulator also runs 3 other games (albeit not perfect). Just type afterburneremu
followed by 1 for Outrun, 2 for Super Hangon, 3 for Thunderblade, or 4 for After Burner II. You can also download these
games form the ROM Files section in the After Burner area.
ZSNES v1.000 Released
ZSNES (probably the best SNES emulator out there) has been updated to v1.0! An absolute TON of new features have been
added. Read the complete What's New
(warning, it's as long as a novel). Also, the author states that just because it's version 1.0 doesn't mean that he's
