Want to play MAME32 over the internet? Kaillera is your answer. Here's what's new in v0.71:

    • you can now play along with players using a different emulator version.
    • added version number on server list.
    • added little dialog icon.

GeneratorMac v0.18 Released
The Mac port of the Sega Genesis emulator Generator was updated to v0.18. Here's what's new:
  • Optimized the main event loop in the hope of making the emulator run a little faster.
  • Found the bug that caused the faster video renderer in Generator's core to lock up on the Mac. As a result, this is now included in the Mac version of Generator - and in fact is switched on by default. You can change to the more accurate (but much slower) renderer in the Preferences dialog. A rough estimate on my Mac shows Generator running at roughly twice the speed with the fast video renderer relative to the more accurate one. Bear in mind, though, that some games (Out Run, Sonic 2 Bonus Level, ...) do not display correctly with the faster video option.
  • Added a few more blitter modes. Thanks to Nathan Strum for several suggestions.
  • Worked around the bug that caused Generator to crash under MacOS X when you clicked on the Apple menu. This is a bug in MacOS X - if the country code in an application's 'vers' resources is set to 50 (Ireland), the application will crash when you click on the apple menu under OS X. I've set the country code to USA for now.
  • New download "feature" of bannister.org is kin to torture for downloading.
  • New crash bug that shows up under MacOS X. I hope to have a fix for this shortly. In the mean while, I suggest you only use Generator under the classic MacOS.
Download it from the Console Emulators section.

I was hoping to get a beta out to the beta testers this weekend, but it will probably be Monday or Tuesday of next week. Also, I've been working on the ROM search engine to end all search engines. I'm waiting on a third party company to finish their interface before I make it live. They were supposed to be done today, but we know how that goes. Anyway, stay tune for some cool changes!

Mir 1: You 0
If you haven't already heard, the Soviet space station Mir is going to crash to Earth in a few days. You've also probably been hearing that there's no worry because it will crash into the south Pacific Ocean between New Zealand and Chile. However, that's just the plan. Here's just a partial list of some previous satellite/space station re-entry mistakes:
  • In 1978, a Soviet defense satellite plunged out of control and left radioactive debris in the Canadian Arctic.
  • In 1979, NASA said its Skylab space station would land in the Pacific Ocean, but parts of it smashed into the Australian outback.
  • In 1991, Mir's predecessor, Salyut 7, fell on the Andes Mountains.
Also, remember that Mir is 140 tons! And that 40-50 tons is supposed to survive re-entry and is going to land in an area of about 4,000 miles long by 124 miles wide and falling at 300 miles per hour. The pieces are not little either. It's estimated that the pieces will be from about 40 to 2,000 pounds (like getting hit by a compact car going 300 miles per hour). Anyway, if you want to monitor Mir and avoid being hit with a Dodge Neon doing 300mph, check out the above live map that plots the current location of Mir (the image updates every minute). Images created by Northern Lights Software Associates.

Bob's Arcade Emulation
Bob's Arcade Emulation was the last complete ROM site on the internet, but now there are none. It seems that the webmaster of mame.net (Gridle) and Overclock's (Dave) have something against the emulation community and have instructed people to report Bob the IDSA. There are pages and links where these people seem to want to destroy emulation altogether. Anyway, you have the above two people to blame for this. I'm not going to post links, logs, e-mail address. And I don't encourage nor want anyone to do anything about it. I just wanted you to know what kind of people they are and who's to blame for the demise of Arcade Emulation. Sad day, but at least we have a new version of MAME =)

ClrMamePro cfg File

Final Burn v0.111 Released
Along with a new CPS-2 release comes a new version of Final Burn. Here's what's new:
  • Added driver for 19XX (The emu isn't really built for vertical games like 19XX yet, but here's my current beta if you want it anyway. I'm thinking 512x384 or 1024x768 with scanlines would be a good choice - without a fullscreen stretch because otherwise the aspect ratio would be wrong obviously.)
Download it from the Arcade Emulators section.

CALICE v0.1.4 Released
The Capcom System 1 emulator CALICE was updated to v0.1.4 and now supports 52 games as well as the following:

  • Added some new commands to gui

Comic Featuring Me?
It seems the Penny Arcade guys are trying to venture into a new area for them, comedy. Check out the above strip where they feature someone with the name "Tim Eeckel". Funny stuff. Although, if they really had a pair, they would have used my real name. Anyway, I went to a movie with those Penny Arcade guys while in California last year. Here's an outline of that meeting with "Tycho" (Jerry Holkins) and "Gabe" (Mike Krahulik):
  • They shared a hotel room together (I'm guessing they played "Hide the ......" together).
  • One had thinning hair and seemed to never miss a meal, the other had a pencil-thin neck and would be blown away by a strong wind.
  • One (I forget which) carried something which appeared to be a purse.
  • They wanted to see the movie "Battlefield Earth" (they took each other as their date).
  • After the movie, my wife and I wanted to go out to a bar or a club. But, Tycho and Gabe wanted to go back to their hotel room (one can only guess why).
What's really funny is that 100% of the above is true as I witnessed myself. Maybe Mike and Jerry can take my example and show that they have a pair. But, probably not... =)

Changing Colors
Yea I know, the colors change on that ad to the right. It just had a plain white background till someone said that it was boring and needed some color. So, I gave them what they asked for and made it pick a random color. If you don't like it, take it up with my complaint department.

MAME WIP
MAME WIP news for the past few days:
  • March 7th, 2001: Andrea Mazzoleni improved the mixer system to include an adjustable low pass filter, which will be used with the Darius 2 driver. Jarek Burczynski added MB87078 (an electronic volume control) emulation to the Taito B driver. Nicola Salmoria sent in a driver for Over Drive, but it lacks road graphics and sound effects, though music works. Mike Coates fixed the ASM 68k core to compile properly again.
  • March 6th, 2001: Jürgen Buchmüller fixed some bugs in the state saving functions, added support for them to the DECO Cassette system driver and updated the NEC uPD7810 CPU core again.
  • March 5th, 2001: David Haywood added state saving to the Sega C2 driver, fixed some small bugs in it and also added state saving to Ninja Kid. Olivier Galibert fixed a bug in the 6502 core which was introduced by the saved states support, and some Taito games that were broken because of some bugs in the state saving code. Jürgen Buchmüller sent in another NEC uPD7810 CPU core update with some bugfixes. Nicola Salmoria added K053936 graphics chip emulation to Blazing Tornado, and improved the K054157 emulation a bit.
  • March 4th, 2001: Nicola Salmoria improved the C 68k core so that it can use separate memory handlers for different width data, and he fixed it from crashing in many Neo Geo games. Keith Wilkins added discrete sound support to Fire Truck and fixed a few other bugs in the discrete sound engine. Bryan McPhail and David Haywood added some more NMK games to the Bombjack Twin driver but they all suffer from unemulated protection and don't work very well. Warlock submitted an update to the input port routines, fixing some bugs and improving wheel and pedal support. Bryan McPhail fixed Super Chase input ports and cleaned up the driver a little. Jürgen Buchmüller added some more functionality to the NEC uPD7810 CPU core. Olivier Galibert added linescroll support to the Konami K054157 emulation, used by Xexex, GI Joe and Asterix. Mike Coates fixed several bugs in the ASM 68k core.
  • March 3rd, 2001: David Haywood added Thunder Dragon to the Bombjack Twin driver. Marco Cassili partly fixed dip switch settings in Thunder Dragon. Olivier Galibert sped up Asterix graphics emulation. Nicola Salmoria added Blazing Tornado to the Metro driver, and fixed 8bpp tile support so that Bal Cube now works properly as well. Blazing Tornado however lacks background graphics. David Graves added the correct PROMs to the Darius driver. Jürgen Buchmüller fixed a few bugs in the NEC uPD7810 CPU core.

ePSXe v1.2.0 Updated
The Sony Playstation emulator ePSXe was updated to v1.2.0. Here's what you get, like it or not:
  • Added better analogic pad emulation and force feedback. It is now possible to configure the analogic axis and the effect of the force feedback motors. (Many thanks to Alex7 and to www.burutter.com, for donating a very nice psx to usb pad converter and giving help on adding support for it).
  • Now ePSXe includes savestates support. F1 = save state, F2 = increase slot (max = 5), F3 = load state. The savestates are compressed and saved to the sstates directory, with an average size of 1.5Mb. (WARNING!!! In release date it is supported only in the following plugins: Lewpy Gpu, Pete Gpu, Pete Spu and ePSXe Spu, support will be included in more plugins soon by the plugins authors)
  • Partially re-writen the internal spu, it should be faster, have less sound glitches and better sound quality.
  • Optimizations added in gte, mdec and core which makes some games work some fps faster than before.
  • Fixes to the CD-Rom decoder and the core, which make some more games playable like for example Gran Turismo, Resident Evil, Ape Escape, Kingley Adventure, Legend of Legaia (use the "-legaia" command line), Final Fantasy IX PAL and so on ;-)
Download it from the PlayStation section.

RockNES v1.820 Mac Released
The Mac version of RockNES was updated to v1.820. Due to Richard Bannister's new POS download script, it's next to impossible for my server to download anything from his server. Anyway, I'd like to personally thank Richard for making all of his emulator ports a royal pain in the ass to download. What's really funny is who the hell cares about Mac emulators so much that they would link to his files anyway? Also, I'd like to suggest that Richard do some studying on .htaccess and mod_rewrite then his silly "anti-leech" scripts wouldn't be required. Anyway, if you just got to have this program, get it from the Console Emulators section. Now I've off to hack into Richard's script so I can link directly to his files...

Final Burn v0.110 Released
Final Burn, the CPS-2 emulator, was updated once again. This version adds support of the just released Quiz Nanairo Dreams. Download it from the Arcade Emulators section. And ,I'd like to publicly state once again how freakin' slow the ztnet/climax media servers are that hosts Final Burn, CPS2 Shock, and a bunch of other emulation sites. I mean come on, it took 403.58 seconds to download the 153kB Final Burn v0.110. That's a blistering 387 BITS per second. Yea, I said BITS! Remember 300 baud modems? Now we all can experience 300 baud modems once again. Is this designed to be a retro 300 baud emulator? I suggest everyone that hosts with them to move to Geocities, or something.

A few days later I posted this:
