Netflix Rules
First off, I admit it. Netflix is a sponsor of Arcade@Home and will get paid if you join. However, if you don't know about Netflix or haven't tried them you really should. They're offering a free trial this month (which ends in a few days) where you can rent as many DVD's as you want for $20/month (after your trial period). They also have other packages with different amounts of movies you can have out at a time. I wouldn't normally talk about a sponsor like this, but I love their service so much I figured I had to. They have a really cool Amazon-like profile system where you rate movies and they suggest movies you may be interested in based on your ratings. You setup a queue of movies you're interested in, rank them, and they will automatically send you the next DVD from your list when you return one. You can even put movies that are not yet released into your queue. For movies you're not sure of, you can read reviews from others to make your decision (many movies have hundreds of reviews). You can slice and dice searches in anyway you like (click on an actor or director's name and you get all related movies). They even have trailers for many movies in three different connection speeds. Like I said, Netflix is a sponsor of Arcade@Home, but seriously, I love their service and it's like the internet was designed for them. It's fast, easy to use, cost-comparable to the video store, and it's free to try out. Okay, I'll stop my gushing, but it's rare that you find something this good.

Screen Shot Browser
The MAME Screen Shot Browser was updated to include the latest games in MAME v0.37b15. This is a great tool to jog your memory of some old favorite game that you've forgotten. • Fixed 16bit access to address $001FFF (or equivalent). Fixes Super Tetris 2+Bombliss. [zsKnight]

  • Tuff-E-Nuff works now (another timing hack *sigh* )
  • Added exclusive DirectSound mode option [pagefault]
  • Fixed corrupt graphics in Rock'n Roll racing (reading from invalid memory) [zsKnight]

  • Fixed corrupt graphics in Captain America (also reading from invalid memory) [zsKnight]
  • Implemented latest save state selection in Windows port [pagefault]

  • Added SA-1 read/write to BWRAM bitmap mode in the lower banks [zsKnight]

CatVer.ini v0.37b15 Released
The catetory and version information file for Arcade@Home was updated to v0.37b15. Download it from the Front-Ends section. Thanks to Classic Arcade Project for the file. Also, while talking about Arcade@Home, I've been working on the changes required to make it work with WinMAME (or MAMEW as some are calling it). I've got lots of changes already done and lots more to do. None of it is very difficult, just takes some time. I don't have a good idea when I'll send it out to the beta testers, but it shouldn't be too long by the looks of things. Stay tuned.

Daedalus INI v1.0b Released
The Nintendo 64 emulator Daedalus had it's INI file updated to v1.0b and adds the following:
  • Completely new ROM entries.
  • Completely new ROM settings.
  • Completely new ROM comments/info.
  • Entire ini is in alphabetical order.
  • CRC and Country Codes are left in lowercase.
  • ROM titles are all correct. (Thanks Cowering! (goodn64 v0.999.4 BETA).
  • ROM comments/info are all uniform.
  • Version ROMs are now recognized. (e.g. (v1.1), (v1.2), etc...)
  • PAL/EUR ROMs are given the same comment/info as the USA ROM if one exists. This saved a lot of time during testing and wasn't really anything to worry about...as Daedalus isn't picky about what country ROMs are from. However, some...if not most PAL/EUR ROMs have screen alignment errors that wern't listed under the 'info=' area, so be aware.
  • Did I mention that this ini is TOTALLY NEW...nothing was carried over from other ini files except for the UCodes =).
Download it from the Nintendo 64 section under Daedalus Utilities & Info.

CPS-2 Releases
Two new CPS-2 games were dumped! Super Street Fighter 2 X (Jpn) and Street Fighter Zero 3. Here's the decryption tables:Note that these ar NOT the ROMs but simply XOR tables that allow the encrypted ROMs to be unencrypted.

Runtime Error 5 Fix
While I didn't have any problems running WinMAME with Arcade@Home, some did. Thanks to the efforts of FireGeek and Damon, the solution has been found. The problem is with the arcade.pif and arcade2.pif files that Arcade@Home uses to run MAME with. I used pif files because it gives more control to the user to run batch files or even other programs before running MAME. It also allows you to tweak DOS settings for your particular system.

In this case, the issue is with the "Prevent MS-DOS-based programs from detecting Windows". In some versions of Windows, it's on the Program tab within the Properties of the pif file. In other versions of Windows you have to hit the "Advanced" button on the Program tab to see this option. This option needs to be turned OFF (no checkmark). Once you do this, Arcade@Home should no longer give the error 5 message with WinMAME.

WinMAME Quits when Running A@H
I suggested a few days ago that you need to remove all the command line options in Arcade@Home that WinMAME doesn't support. With the current version of WinMAME, if you set a command that it doesn't support, WinMAME terminates instead of continuing (I suggest to MAMEDEV that they change it so it continues instead of terminating). Anyway, if you're experiencing this problem, the easiest way to make a game work is to go into the Settings in Arcade@Home and click on the "None" settings at the bottom right. WinMAME will now run with just the settings in the mame.ini file. You should also do this within the Default Game Settings so all games that you don't have a custom settings assigned also work. I'm working on changing Arcade@Home so it supports the new features of WinMAME. WinMAME seems to work really well on every OS I try, so I think I'll make it the default version of MAME to use with Arcade@Home going forward, anyone object?

MAME v0.37b15 i686

The excellent and "free" Nintendo GameBoy Advance emulator was updated to v0.19b. It adds TONS of new features, just download it from the Console Emulators section. Also, the emulator is now cardware (send a postcard to register). If you register, you'll get private betas.

Fastness
Arcade@Home's hosting company has fixed the problem with one of their lines and all the routing problems it was causing. Everything is back to normal, for now anyway. =)

Slowness
I'm sure most have noticed some slowness over the last 24 hours. This is due to a system-wide problem my hosting company is having. They're working on the problem, but it's been next to impossible to do any updates because of it.

A@H Works with WinMAME
It seems that Arcade@Home works with the new WinMAME. I just renamed mamew.exe to mame.exe and ran Arcade@Home and it updated without a hitch. Gotta love that auto stretch to full-screen. So MAME wouldn't give an error, I had to set the Sound option to [Don't set] and the Sample bits to 8. You may have to change other settings because it seems that if you try to use a command line switch that isn't supported it gives an error and doesn't continue as you would expect. To get the command line it's sending, just hold down your shift key when you press Play and a prompt will come up showing the command line it's sending. Just change options till the one that's causing the problem is found. I'll be changing Arcade@Home so it doesn't set these options once the dust settles. However, it would be a good idea to suggest to MAMEDEV that if a command is selected that isn't supported it should still continue to run instead of giving an error and quitting.

MAME v0.37b15 Released!
MAME was updated to v0.37b15 and now runs on Windows by default. I've been at the hospital all day so I don't even know if Arcade@Home works with it or you have to use the DOS version instead. If the Windows version doesn't work, try the DOS version. If the DOS version doesn't work either, please don't e-mail me because I'll know about it and be working on it. Here's the newly supported games:
  • Power Play [Aaron Giles]
  • Neck & Neck [Aaron Giles]
  • Shuffleshot [Aaron Giles]

retoDrive Release 1
Seems that the Sega Genesis/32X emulator GENSX has a little bit of an identity complex. It was first called Vegas, then changed its name to GENSX, and now it's retroDrive. • Tweaked PSG balancing and fixed a bug in it.
  • Major architectural changes to the 68000 emulation.
  • Fixed a big problem with the Genesis sound emulation. Nearly all sound problems have been fixed!

D-BOY v0.75a Released
The Nintendo GameBoy emulator for DOS was updated to v0.75a. Translating the what's new from Japanese to English indicates that the author, BouKiCHi, has been very busy and hasn't had time to work on D-BOY. I believe the two changes are that you can now specify a Japanese directory from the congifuration file and a -video 6 mode was added. Download it from the Console Emulators section.

Yesterday, May 19th, Arcade@Home broke a single day record for the number of visitors and page views. A total of 959,050 page views were recorded yesterday (couldn't quite break a million). In the last few days there's been about a 10% jump in the number of visitors, so I wanted to welcome all the new people. I think I'll have a beer to celebrate.

Nebula v1.4 Released
The CPS-2 emulator with a theme-song Nebula was updated to v1.4, here's what's new:
  • Some rom files has been renamed to match the latest CPS2MAME rom names.
  • Ability to filter the game list. You can select if you want to seel all games, or only the available ones.
  • Roms now aren't analyzed everytime Nebula starts. They are checked when romsets are changed or when you press the Rescan button in the OTHER config screen.
  • Changed main 68000 core to Bart Trzynadlowski's Genital 68k, which is a bit faster than starscream, and has less bugs (perhaps none).
  • Rewritten the layer 2 drawing code. Rowscrolling problems are almost fixed (only missing avsp intro). It has caused a small slowdown, but with the little speedup of the main core the speed should be the same as before.
  • 19xx gfx problems fixed at last. If you use old savegames, then the problems will not be fixed until a stage change in the game.
  • As some people has reported that the new gfx code (v1.3 and later) is slower than the older one (1.2 and before), then I've added the ability to use the old gfx code using the -oldgfx command line option.
  • Sprite priority code has back to the original code that causes less gfx problems.
  • Implemented sprite bankswitching (one of the still unemulated features of the cps2 hardware)
  • Added PNG unfiltering modes (Sub,Up,Avg,Paeth). PNG files created with other tools should look right now.
  • Fixed most Raster problems. Things look a lot better. Only remaining some sprite problems.
  • Changed the Savegame format. Now the sound is correctly restored when loading a savegame. The old format is still recognized and loaded.
  • Data files (configuration and savegames) are not encrypted anymore. If you want info about the format of these files, send me an E-mail.
  • Fixed the "controller setting forgetting" bug. It's fixed now, but it requieres that you delete the old config files.
  • Added the ability to save the controller data as the default mapping for games using the same button layout.
  • GUI graphics can be changed (see -packgui option and the section below).
Download it from the Arcade Emulation section and you've got to check out their home page. They should stick with emulator programming and not venture into web design =)

Pop-ups?
Some people are reporting a pop-up on every page. I don't experience that and only get a few pop-ups that are easy to close (they don't spawn new pop-ups). I'm looking into this. I'm guessing that it has to build some kind of profile before the number of pop-ups are reduced, but that's just a guess. Just letting everyone know that a pop-up on every page isn't the intent.

Fewer Ads
Because of your support for the sponsors, over the past few days I've been removing ads from Arcade@Home. You should notice fewer ads both at the top and bottom of the page as well as fewer and less annoying pop-ups. The pop-ups that spawned more pop-ups and wouldn't let you close them should be gone. I had to stop using a very good advertiser because of these kinds of pop-ups, so please support the new sponsors.

Selling ROMs?
I got a few e-mails about a new ROM site and that I should post news about it. First of all, I don't post news about ROMs sites, I don't think it's good to make ROM sites too public because the problems it can cause. Also, this particular site is selling ROMs via a "donation" system. Some could argue if this is selling or not, but I believe it's selling and against the spirit of emulation. Imagine if all ROM sites did this, the IDSA, Nintendo and others would be all over emulation. Anyway, there are lots of free ROM sites anyway.

Final Burn Hack v1.8 Released
If you didn't know already, Vintage Gaming Network (Dave's Classics) is now hosted here at Arcade@Home. Anyway, I read over on VGN that a new version of the Final Burn Hack was released. Here's what's new:

Geoshock's Back
The DNS stuff was updated and Geoshock is back. That will teach katharsis for asking me to get his e-mail working =)

Oops
Seems I messed up some site code changes yesterday which caused some people to get error messages. I think if you have cookies off you got these errors. I believe I fixed the problem, but if you experience any errors, let me know. Also, you should really turn on cookies because that's what prevents you from getting too many pop-ups and other kinds of ads. You shouldn't be afraid of cookies, only the site that set the cookie can view it so they are secure and anonymous.

ROM Search Engine
We've been working on a new feature for Arcade Emulation which allows you to search for ROMs on the internet to find alternate download locations. A "soft" release of this feature was done last night and it seems to be working. It's not perfect, some files still can't be found, but it's fairly good and we'll continue to tweak it. The feature can be found on Arcade Emulation when you go to download a file. If the load is too high, you'll be offered an option labeled "Search the Web: Find Download Mirrors!". Please don't report problems with this feature, it's still being developed and will never be 100% accurate (we hope for 90%). Visit Arcade Emulation on the ROM Files section.

Arcade@Home Shoot Down
Every once in a while I get a really funny e-mail. This one was too good and I just had to share it with you:
On the year 2000 was Arcade@Home a great Site. Downloads with a good speed, but now? No Download works, have you a sh*t Server? Better whas you shutting down your Site, is not good what you make with the Fans of Mame, no Rom updates, shit commentars and many others. Why that? Many of small sites has completley Romsets for Beta 14 and you have nothing. Shoot down your Page, shoot down.
    Dragoon
Heh, "shoot down". Here's a news flash brainiak, Arcade@Home hasn't had ROMs for about 3 years. I think this guy was talking about another site but sent it to the wrong guy, too funny.

It was my son's 5th birthday yesterday so I took the day off. Yea, you're not as important as my son =) The thing he wanted most for his birthday was a color printer. Yea, he's a carbon copy of myself.

MAME WIP 29th - May 1st
MAME WIP news for April 29th through May 1st:
  • May 1st, 2001: Bryan McPhail fixed a 68020 core bug which caused a lot of problems with the Taito F3 driver, namely a Puzzle Bobble 2 intro background graphics problem and some Bubble Memories bugs. In addition, the bugfix makes the following games fully playable: Elevator Action Returns, Darius Gaiden, Puzzle Bobble 4, Landmaker, Twin Qix and Gekirindan. Aaron Giles fixed a small interface bug in the Win32 version, and added better support for non-standard aspect ratios. Aaron also added overlay support for Avalance. Yochizo and Takahiro Nogi wrote a driver for Super Real Mahjong P2, but sound frequency might be a bit off.
  • April 30th, 2001: Bernd Wiebelt updated the Win32 version's config routines. Aaron Giles sent in another Win32 version update with some cleanups and bugfixes. Dave Haywood and M.A.S.H. added another Galaxy Wars romset.
  • April 29th, 2001: Nathan Woods added state saving support for the 6821 PIA chip.

ZSNES v1.20 Released
Both the Windows and DOS versions of this excellent Super Nintendo emulator were updated to v1.20. Here's what's new:
  • Final Fantasy Mystic Quest works again.
  • Fixed Empire Strikes Back crashing bug in the millenium falcon sequence (hopefully this will fix some other games too)
  • Removed all self-modifying code in ZSNES. This will make ZSNES crash a lot less on certain systems, especially during mode 7 sequences. Thanks Ivar!
  • Implemented S-RTC chip, using the system clock as the actual time (The game will make you set the time though, but it will just be replaced with the system time in-game). Thanks to John Weidman and Dark Force for the info on this chip!
  • Fixed crashing bug in certain mosaic scenes (eg. FF3 Phantom Forest) in the new graphics engine
  • Fixed a nasty crashing/corruption bug in the new graphics engine (both 8bit and 16bit)
  • SPC7110 emulation! This is based on the information reverse engineered by the hard working folks at dejap translations, Dark Force and John Weidman.
  • Altered HiROM/LoROM detection a bit - Fievel goes West works now
  • Open source preparations [teuf]
  • In-game clock working for the windows port. [kode54]
  • Fixed a memory leak problem in the new graphics engine [TRAC]
  • Added Cubic Spline Interpolation [Anti Resonance]
  • Fixed a assign/compare size bug in the new graphics engine [TRAC]
  • Fixed b flag setting in BRK instruction in 6502 emulation mode [zsKnight]
  • Added SPC7110 logger file output to help in the filesize clipping of the SPC7110 data files [zsKnight]
  • Fixed a memory leak bug, fixing that nasty Win2K crash bug [Matthew Kendora]
  • Fixed key combination release [Maxim]
  • Fixed source code warnings/added necessary includes [Maxim]
  • Added high priority mode for Windows 2000 users and slower computers (works on Windows 9x as well) [pagefault]
  • Added large sound buffer option for people having DirectSound problems. [pagefault]
  • Fixed problem with ZSNESW and Opera causing a BSOD. [pagefault]
  • Fixed up error reporting for people experiencing problems. [pagefault]
  • Improved performance on 3dfx cards by compiling with DirectX 8 SDK. [pagefault]
  • Fixed a sound problem with people with messed up config files. [pagefault]
  • Fixed FF3 flashing line problem [zsKnight]
  • Fixed mysterious sprite disappearing bug in the new graphics engine [zsKnight]
  • Reduced noise in ToP opening theme. It works fine in the DOS port, but the windows port still seems to produce some static, probably because of the way how sound is updated in that port. [zsKnight]
  • Updated Super 2xSaI and Super Eagle code (should be much faster now on MMX processors) [Kreed, added by pagefault]
  • Added gzip support [teuf]
  • Added support for ViBRA16 cards [Peter Santing]
  • No longer requires zlib.dll file, now statically linked. ZSNESw won't crash anymore if you try to load a .zip file without that dll file. [pagefault]
  • Now compiled using an optimising compiler [pagefault]
  • Almost a fully re-written DSP-1 emulation engine! [zsKnight, theoddone33, pagefault, teuf]. Also thanks to CrASH_Man for the 3x3 inverse matrix formula.
  • Fixed memory leak problem in the windows port during exit [pagefault]
  • And more ...
Ouch, that's a long list. Download it from the Console Emulators section.
