Merry Christmas from [email protected]
Merry Christmas Merry Christmas and a happy new year from all the staff at [email protected] 2001 was a great year for [email protected] with a large transition from being owned by an evil third party to being purchased back by myself. While other "Dot Com's" died, had to beg for donations, or paid registrations, [email protected] flourished as a 100% free and non-begging site. Increased traffic, server updates, many new hosted sites, and low overhead (for the demand) has kept [email protected] running strong. Here's wishing everyone a wonderful and UBL free 2002.

Visual Pinball DF5 Released
This is one excellent Pinball simulator that also has an interface to Visual PinMAME which adds emulated graphics and triggers to a pinball simulation. Very cool. Anyway, this release DF5 (DogFood 5) adds the following:
  • A new object type - EMReel, which simulates a rotary wheel score display (or use it with images for a slot machine, etc.)
  • Collections can fire events as a unit
  • The options panel can modify the properties of multiple items at once (they all have to be of the same type).
  • A new global variable in script called GameTime that gives you how long the game has progressed in milliseconds. I put this in mainly for external physics simulations (magnets, spinning wheels) that required the correct timing.
  • Resources can be held in an external file for easy localization. I've pretty much dropped the ball in terms of foreign languages for the past few releases, hopefully this will make it much easier since localizers will no longer need to coordinate with me at all. I'll probably release the external file as a separate thing later.
  • Cursor keys move objects in the editor, shift-key moves them farther.
  • There is now a 'Lock' option on the context-menu for each object.
  • Editor remembers the size of the window from session to session.
  • You can select objects by name from the toolbar on the left. This is most useful for selecting entire collections at once. You'll notice the look of the toolbar has changed a bit; it now scrolls when there is not enough space for all the icons. Some things have moved but it's easy to get used to.
  • Full screen mode does not hang with vpinmame tables any longer.
  • Pictures on bumpers now light up. Right now this means that bumpers with pictures on them draw a little darker than before when they are off, but they look neat when they light up.
  • There is a new property of a table called YieldTime. It can be set to make VP yield to background processes, and I have also found that it makes vpinmame games much smoother and responsive; it seems to weave the thread together more evenly. I no longer have to push to flipper button 2 seconds before I want it to flip. I'm not sure what the final effect of this property will be, I'll put it out there and see how it works for people.
  • And some bugs fixes and stuff.

Barforama 2001
If you've seen the movie "Stand By Me", you'll remember the barforama. Well I experienced my own barforama over the last few days and it wasn't a pretty sight. Two kids puking every 5 minutes all night when you feel the same isn't what I call fun. Anyway, we all feel much better now so back to emulation stuff...

Back from DisneyWorld
Got back from DisneyWorld in Florida yesterday and had a surprise on my doorstep, a new 2GHz P4 that my company purchased for me. =) But, one of my other computers must have taken a power spike when I was gone because its power supply was fried. Then, Trying to get my existing hard drive running WinXP working on the new computer was a BEAR and I basically had 3 dead computers for a couple days. :( Anyway, all 3 computers are running fine now so I can catchup on a few new releases.Download them from the above links.

MAME Needed Soon
The word is out that the next release of MAME (v0.57) will be HUGE. Over 1GB of new games will be included (some will surely be redumps). We can expect lesser ROM sites to be very slow, restrict access, or even demand "donations" (it's not really a donation anymore when you're required to donate). Anyway, get ready by downloading the v0.57 needed soon games from the Arcade Emulation link on the ROM Files section.

Those with X & Y chromosone confusion should rejoyce! A new version of MacMAME has been released. Here's what's new:
  • Fixed issue that caused many games to not work at all or only partially work. [Brad Oliver]

This also fixes a bug that caused MacMAME to crash violently if you tried to drag-n-drop text from any of the ROM report dialogs under 10.1.x. [Brad Oliver]
