Mame32 v86 has been released
    Driver Improvements:
  • M37710, NamcoSS22 and C352 improvements [R.Belmont]
  • M37710 changes (m37710.diff)
  • NamcoSS22 changes (s22.diff): All CPU clocks changed to measured-by-Guru values, Handle the changed M37710 bus width
  • Temporarily disconnect shared RAM. There's a problem where the 68020's shared RAM test wipes out the 37710's work variables and causes it to crash
  • C352 change (c352.diff):
  • Remove debug printf that accidentally snuck in
  • SPI Improvements [Ville Linde]
  • Improved (but not yet correct) tilemap decryption
  • Preliminary sprite priority support
  • PowerPC 403 core [Ville Linde, Bart Trzynadlowski, Stefano Teso] This is basically SuperModel (Sega Model 3 emu)'s PPC core minus the FPU and 6xx series specific instructions (that stuff isn't ported to MAME yet).
  • Virtua Racing improvements [Olivier Galibert, Andrew Gardner]
  • Hyperstone CPU Core Improvements [Tomasz Slanina, Pierpaolo Prazzoli]
  • Various Konami PPC based games [Ville Linde] gticlub, gradius4, sscope, sscope2, racingj, racingj2, thrilld, midnrun, windheat
  • These are to demonstrate the PPC core in action, they contain only very preliminary emulation and do nothing more than display the initial test screens.
  • Cool Riders [David Haywood] skeleton driver, to be continued at a later date
  • Pit Boss added to merit driver, not investigated the issues yet
  • Tatakae! Big Fighter [Tomasz Slanina] serious protection issues
  • Cool Mini: Hyperstone based game, incomplete set

update to PC2E the pcengine emulator
PC2E is a rather new take in pcengine emulation, this nifty program attempts to make use of today's graphic power to enhance the pcengine experience, not only is it leaps ahead of others but the authors tend to keep it free, that is not the case with other emulators. current changes made are:
    • - Fixed a major bug that it did not respond to any keyboard input in fullscreen mode on windows2000/XP.
    • - Improved CD play command.
    • - Improved implementation for joystick input.
    • - Speeded up things
    • - Changed implementation of "stretched" screen modes. ("stretched" fullscreen mode now attempt to use hardware acceleration)
    • - Made a simple configuration program (pc2ecfg.exe)
    • - Updated the TOC database.
    • Get it from the page at the top of this post

Click here for a larger image Over at EmuTalk Forums, someone has released a modified version of Chankast that includes a ton more options and features that will be updated along with the Official Chankast by another team of people. It is quite impressive and is a must try since it also is known to fix speed problems tremendously to even a crazy 100+FPS for this emulator! It also has a Cheats System, Snapshot Maker, Region Selector, and also my favorite feature, it can can check if a new version of the Official Chankast has been released. Chankast Released
Chankast is to my knowledge the first released DC emulator to actually run commercial games! I'll hand you over to the release notes.

Chankast is an advanced SEGA DREAMCAST emulator for x86 platforms.

This project started 3 months ago, it's a joint venture between baktery, unai and garrofi. It hasn't been easy, a lot of hours and headaches, but we think it's time to release an alpha version. We hope you will be surprise, you can play commercial games at a decent speed with a 2ghz CPU. Chankast is a very fast emulator with no hle parts.

We haven't done this emulator to promote piracy, it's a tribute to the great DC.

The emulator is far from perfect, expect new releases with more speed, better graphics, better sound, and more compatibility :)

A@H in June Issue of Popular Science
Click here for a larger image Arcade@Home got a page write-up in the June 2004 issue of Popular Science magazine (on news stands now). It's a "How To" "Do it Yourself" article on how to run MAME in an arcade cabinet. They even have a graphic of my arcade cabinet and lots of building details (they asked for lots of pictures for this article). Well done and a nice plug for Arcade@Home and other MAME and arcade cabinet building sites. You can also read the article on the Popular Science web site.

Spain is now run by terrorists
It seems that the terrorists won against the Spanish people. While it was very sad what happened in Madrid with the train bombings. The solution to give into the terrorists demands with their votes is pathetic. The US still considers Spain a friend, and the election results won't change that. But, it doesn't show a lot of backbone that terrorists can so easily overthrow the Spanish government and that the people would allow such a thing to happen.

Those that switched their votes because of the train bombings need to grow a spine and get a brain. Giving into the demands of terrorists sends the message that it works. You don't negotiate with terrorists and you don't give them what they want or you can expect more terrorism. Also, THEY actually control you, not the politicians you voted in because THEY forced a government out and a new government in. Pathetic.

Spain is now run and controlled by terrorists. Nice going.

    ClrMAMEPro 3.21 Released
ClrMAMEPro is a ROM manager for Windows.
    • changed fake clone (100% identical sets) behaviour. Since I think the number of sets in your rompaths should match the number of sets in MAME, you need the fake sets now (in split and non-merged set mode only of course). And since I don't like empty zipfiles you have to double them
    • infoprompts about fake clones only appear in "show all" mode
    • infoprompts about possible nodump replacement with known crc32 within parent/clone relationships is only shown when using "show all" mode. The default value is YES, the nodumps are replaced with good ones to prevent keeping dummies in fullmerge mode.
    • titlebars show number of biossets, too
    • missing biosroms toggle a green profile status to red now
    • little zipscan speedincrease for sets with lots of files

    Rice's Daedalus Plugin 5.3.1 Released
Rice's Daedalus Plugin is a graphics plugin for Nintendo64 emulators. The development for this plugin is now over by the looks -- Rice said that this will be the last release for "this time period".
    • Changes:
      • Reported GUI problem fix
      • Improved OGL 1.2/1.3 combiner. (Still not good enough yet)
      • Bettle Adv. Racing texture fix
      • All-Star Baseball games field texture problem fix
      • All-Star Baseball menu text
      • More manual combiner setting for Zelda and Pokemon 2
      • Source code is cleaned for release
    • Regarding the source code:
      • Please let me know if you are planning to port it or to use or refer it in your own code
      • There are many changes recently for frame buffer features. Frame buffer feature is working in DirectX only, not in OGL
      • There are not significant changes in OGL code and OGL combiners
      • Frame buffer features are not stable enough, could causing system lockup and even reboot on certain video cards.
      • You are welcome to work on the source code.
      • Email me for further questions and suggestions.
    • >>> Source code is reloaded, to add .rc file <<<
      • (You can create a "rice" folder in your C driver. The plugin will then be able to log unsupported combiner modes into a log file in the folder. This won't affect your game. Send me the log file and I will manually create settings for the unsupported combiner modes.)

MAME v.78 released "xmas tree" edition
MAME is the multiple arcade machine emulator, started by nicola salmoria, the project has grown into a huge collaboration, thousands of romsets have been emulated.
    • Various System 24 Improvements, Fixing Priorities, Clipping issues etc. [Olivier Galibert]
    • Improved Lightgun Code / Reload Handling [Bryan McPhail] '-lightgun' now enables the lightgun only - no button remapping is performed. '-reload' (formally '-offscreen_reload') is now needed for 2nd button presses to map to offscreen shots. '-dual' (formally '-dual_lightgun') adds support for the Actlabs Dual Lightgun setup, it may be used with and without '-reload' and it requires '-lightgun'. This mode attempts to automatically remap the player 1 & 2 buttons to suit the lightgun setup. If it doesn't work you probably need to delete the .cfg file for that game.
    • Removed '(hack?) from descriptions of newly added raizing games, stickers on the boards seem to indicate they are genuine Korean release versions.

    final burn alpha v0.2.94.56 Released

    • Added a driver for Cave games
    • Added a driver for Rainbow Islands
    • Added support for X-Arcade joystick

mame 32 V.077 has been released
Mame32. is an Official, license compliant, & MameDEV sanctioned build of mame for windows, has an easier interface, it is produced by Chris Kirmse - the original Mame32 author, Mike Haaland - architect of the GUI and John IV.
    • Fulfilling the longstanding feature req. added the ability to globally alter vector.ini and driver.ini's to match the core. Secondary click on the vector folder • properties in the folder pane to set options for that group of games. To alter global settings for game families, drill down into the source folder in the folder pane, and secondary click on a driver's properties i.e. 1942.c. This will change options for all games based on that driver. The different levels of alteration are color coded, vector.ini changes are red, driver.ini changes are green, and individual game settings are blue. Thus there is the possibility to have four color/levels of alterations when a game's individual properties are viewed in All Games or any folder. The changes can be backed out of hierarchically with reset to default on each respective properties, the reset to default global option, or by deleting the .ini files in the \ini directory. Note: Currently the color alterations do not display properly with XP in themed mode, but the functionality works [bug 462]. Coded solutions to this issue via DIFF are welcomed. [René Single / Chris Kirmse / John IV]

    FCEUltra v0.97.3 released!

This fantastic NES emulator has finally been updated. Versions 0.97, 0.97.1 and v0.97.2 were source-only releases. Here's what is new, starting with the latest:

    v0.97.3
    • Added a control to set the highest quality sound mode in Windows. This change requires that any users who previously set "high quality sound" to set it again
    • Fixed the volume of high-quality sound mode again. The changes I made earlier didn't affect all the filter coefficients
    v0.97.2
    • Made a minor optimization to writes to palette memory
    • Altered VRC6 IRQ emulation timing slightly
    • Fixed a weirdo PPU emulation bug that could cause garbage on the right side of the screen in certain situations. Thanks to FrenziedPanda for bugging me enough to make me look into the problem and fix it. I should be on the lookout to see if the fix breaks anything, though
    • Fixed the volume of high-quality sound mode (-soundq 1). It was at 1/4 the volume it should have been. I compensated by increasing the precision of the filter coefficients, which increased the sound quality of that mode slightly without hurting performance
    v0.97.1
    • Fixed mapper 105 emulation. I had begun merging it into the rest of the MMC1 code for 0.97, but I hadn't finished it
    • Changed things like RdMem(_PC++); to RdMem(_PC); _PC++; Darn evil global variables. I need to fix them. Screw speed
    • Expanded checks for the global variable "fceuindbg" (used in debug mode to prevent reads in the debugger from altering any registers)
    v0.97
    • Fixed a bug in the IPS patcher. The recorded size wasn't being updated after a successful realloc() was made, which could lead to corrupted patch data from some patches
    • Added support for mappers 200, 201 from submitted code Rewrote mapper 15 support to make more sense (well, depending on your point of view...)
    • Fixed 256KB CHR select support for mapper 115
    • Added support for mapper 12 from code from cah4e3
Grab the latest version at the above link!

    ROM copyright exemptions!

Copyright Protection Exemption Granted to Obsolete Videogames

Quote: In response to a filing by Brewster Kahle of The Internet Archive, Lawrence Lessig of Creative Commons, and others, the Librarian of Congress granted exemptions from copyright protection measures in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act to obsolete videogames. The exemption applies to games that require the original media or hardware as a condition of access, and it determines a format obsolete "if the machine or system necessary to render perceptible a work stored in that format is no longer manufactured or is no longer reasonably available in the commercial marketplace."

According to the original filing, the exemption was proposed in order to migrate degraded and obsolete works to modern storage systems, and enable "archiving, future scholarship, and commentary." On October 28, 2003, the Librarian of Congress, on the recommendation of the Register of Copyrights, announced the classes of works subject to the exemption from the prohibition against circumvention of technological measures that control access to copyrighted works. The four classes of works exempted are:

**about ROMS**(3) Computer programs and video games distributed in formats that have become obsolete and which require the original media or hardware as a condition of access. A format shall be considered obsolete if the machine or system necessary to render perceptible a work stored in that format is no longer manufactured or is no longer reasonably available in the commercial marketplace.

MAME is the multiple arcade machine emulator, started a few years ago mame has grown into an emulator that now runs thousands of romsets.
      mame 76 released
It appears no new timer system related bugs were found with 0.75u1 so *hopefully* this release will be better than the last, 0.75 ended up not being not too great due to the problems with the YM2151 sound etc.
    • Various ST-V and SH-2 improvements, shienryu is improved as are many other games but no more are really playable yet (although I have changed Shienryu to IMPERFECT_GFX instead of NOT_WORKING as it seems ok, just the sprites are black) [David Haywood, Olivier Galibert, sthief, Angelo Salese]
    • Added Insector sound rom loading [Fabrice Frances]
    • Changed Jumping Cross default dipswitches
    • Fixed invalid dipswitch in Big Event Golf
    • Readded a bit of code that was removed from blockage driver when it was converted to use tilemap (blasto needed it)
New Games supported or promoted from GAME_NOT_WORKING status:
    • VS. Super Xevious [Pierpaolo Prazzoli]
    • VS. Freedom Force [Pierpaolo Prazzoli]
    • Bishi Bashi Championship Mini Game Senshuken [R. Belmont] some gfx problems
New Clones supported or promoted from GAME_NOT_WORKING status:

    • Fixed some bugs introduced with the timer system changes a while back[Aaron Giles] Hopefully this is the last of them.... Fixes Exterminator and the Atari polygon games. Hopefully doesn't break anything in the process.

    • fixed bug in time computation if requesting a scanline in the next frame removed 4x executes per loop which screwed up timing
    • fixed internal interrupt generation to get consistent timing results

    Pete's Plugins Updated
    Pete's OpenGL2 PSX GPUs V2.1 Released
    • .....Another issue with the previous release was that movies were kinda slow (well, I got over 120 FPS with movies on my Radeon 9700 Pro, so I didn't notice it, sorry). This version will have a nearly doubled speed with most mdecs, so relax :)
    • Skullmonkeys... ah, yeah... sorry to say: the game didn't work perfectly with the last release (I was only able to check out one level... and of course other levels were still screwed). Well, Parotaku gave me another save state, and I think now everything is right... at least Parotaku was not able to find more issues, so blame him if still something is going wrong ;)
    • FrancoisC noticed a bad shading in the Breath Of Fire 4 camp fire on his R8500 with my OGL plugins. First I didn't believe that (I played BOF4 alot in the past), but then I took a closer look... and he was right. After a few investigations I've found out that nVidia cards and ATI cards are doing a different rendering of connected quad polygons. Seems like ATI cards are handling a single "quad_strip" polygon like a "standard quad" one, while nVidia cards are handling it like two connected triangles. Don't ask me what's the correct behaviour, and who is to blame, ehehe. Anyway, I've fixed that... now ATI and nVidia cards will work fine.
    • Ah, and related to the bad BOF4 shading: the car tires in "Driver" were also missing on ATI cards, tsts. Of course that's also fixed.
    • Various small cleanups. Dunno if the speed will increase significantly (I doubt so), but it will not hurt either.
    • I've started again to add good old 'special game fixes' ;) Well, as stated in the 2.0 readme, the 'Legend of Dragoons' battle transitions were not perfect without the "Full" framebuffer effect setting. Since the "full" mode is not really needed in that game (beside that battle transition), I came up with a way to show the effects corretly even if a lower framebuffer effect setting ("standard" or "minimum") is active. The same 'special fix' works also with the "RPG Maker" screen fading effects, btw.
    • This plugin was designed to use nowadays gfx card's capabilities to improve the pixelated psx graphics... and of course a modern buzz word here is "shaders" (or in OpenGLish: vertex and fragment programs). My first steps with shaders were done on my old GF3, using some nV OGL extensions, but I didn't see much benefits for my standard OGL psx plugin. Well, the OGL2 plugin architecture makes it much easier to add all kind of fullscreen effects using shaders, and in OGL1.5 a C-alike shader language (GLslang) will be introduced. So I planned to use GLslang as soon as possible to create some nice realtime fullscreen filters. But then I played with the current ARB shader extensions a bit, and they were working great on my current R9700Pro, so I thought to myself: why waiting? Let's use them now, and maybe replace them later with GLslang.
    • A single thought... and it's done, ehehe. This version has some new options to select "shader effects", available are:
      • fullscreen smoothing - similar to the "screen filtering" option
      • fullscreen smoothing (black/white) - emulates a B&W tv set
      • custom... more about that later :)
    • The level of each effect can be controlled as well (minimum, more, medium, maximum), and each effect can be combined with the "fullscreen filtering" option. The effect level can also be adjusted in the gpu in-game menu, btw.
    • Oh, and please note: the first two shader effects were created with my R9700Pro in mind... they are using up to 8 texture units! That means that all cards with less units will most likely show an error message.
    • But what's that 'custom' mode? Well, I thought it would be nice if interested users could create their own shaders. Therefore the 'custom' mode will load and use two external shader files (one for vertex and one for fragment programs). Simply create a main emu sub-directoy called 'shaders', and place a file named "gpuPeteOGL2.vp" (vertex program) and a file named "gpuPeteOGL2.fp" (fragment program) in it. For all users who don't have a clue how to code such ARB programs, I've included already two sets of shader files in this archive... one for doing a "black & white" effect, and one which is doing a very simple smoothing (using only 4 texture coord units, so it will work with less powerful cards as well).
    Pete's PSX GPUs V1.74 Released
    • A few fixes from the OGL2 plugin also affected the standard OGL/D3D plugins, so I've decided to release them as well. Things fixed (shameless copy of my OGL2 version text):
    • Skullmonkeys... ah, yeah... sorry to say: the game didn't work perfectly with the last release (I was only able to check out one level... and of course other levels were still screwed). Well, Parotaku gave me another save state, and I think now everything is right... at least Parotaku was not able to find more issues, so blame him if still something is going wrong ;)
    • FrancoisC noticed a bad shading in the Breath Of Fire 4 camp fire on his R8500 with my OGL plugins. MESS 0.72 Released
MESS is a multi console emulator for various platforms. Only the DOS & Windows binaries has been updated so far, the authors address ther will be more updates in a few days. news as of now are:
    • [COCO3] Fixed a bug whereby $FE00-$FEFF would be mapped to the wrong memory when bit 3 of $FF90 was set when more than 512k was available. This caused some NitrOS-9 programs to crash when allocating too much memory (bug #352). [Nate Woods]
    • [COCO3] Added '_' to the supported keys for the natural keyboard. '_' is specific to [Nitr]OS-9. [Nate Woods]
    • [JAGUAR EMULATION UPDATE] Some enhancements to the blitter; most games are still not playable however. [Nate Woods]
    • [NES emulation] Updated NES so that it uses the ppu2c03b support within MAME (which was actually originally based on the MESS NES driver code). [Brad Oliver, Nate Woods]
    • [PC] Made fonts, monitor types and CGA chipsets configurable. [John Elliot]
    • [PC] Basic state save support. [Nate Woods]
    • [SNES] Name select is only for sprites using tiles over 255. Fixed sprite wrap at the bottom of the screen. Fixed clearing of HDMA channels. Fixed background colours in mode 0. [Jimmy Li, Anthony Kruize]
    • [TI99] Several behind-the-scenes changes to support TI-99/8 emulation (which is not 100% working and disabled in MESS builds but implemented in source code). Hopefully, there will be no change in functionality in the various TI-99/4(a) drivers. [Raphael Nabet]
    • [VECTREX] Fixed a bug that prevented the default mine.art file from being loaded if no other artwork was found. [Nate Woods]
      User Interface Changes:
    • Added separate configuration menu, to be used for configuration items that were formerly represented with DIP switches. [Nate Woods]
    • [Windows] Revamped options menu, and added a keyboard customization menu. Also added the ability to create artwork for controller configuration screens (used NES as a testbed). [Nate Woods]
      Imgtool Changes:
  • [MAC] Added preliminary support for MFS images. [Raphael Nabet]
  • [TI99] Added support for HD images. [Raphael Nabet]
      Source Changes:
    • The core is based on MAME 0.72. This incorporates all features of the update to this core. [MAME team]
    • Fixed a bug that would cause a hang when parsing certain invalid filenames (for example, D:FOOD:FOOBAR.ZIP). [Nate Woods]
    • Revamped some inputs, added IPT_MOUSE, IPT_START, and IPT_SELECT. The latter two can be used with IPF_PLAYER masks. Also removed legacy IPT_SELECT1-4, and IPT_START1-4 should no longer be used by MESS. [Nate Woods]
    • Tripled the delay in which wd179x errors are reported. This manifested itself in the CoCo driver by an emulated crash on some versions of NitrOS-9 when run on a write protected image. [Nate Woods]

    UltraHLE Dev starting back up
The great n64 emulator (Win), UltraHLE, is being updated once again!!
    Quote from author:
    • Nostalgia is probably the best word for it. Having spent the last few years doing this and that I found myself last weekend trawling through a dusty stack of CDs. To my surprise I found some of the old development code, post 1.0.0 release, of UltraHLE and it was kinda nice loading it back up again and playing some of the classic N64 titles. I decided that it would be nice to relaunch the UltraHLE site and spend some of my free time that I now have to try an piece back together the project. Before anyone jumps the gun don't expect any releases all of a sudden, I'm not committing myself to any targets or timelines, just keeping the project ticking over as and when I can.

    Project64k 0.13 Released
Project64k is a version of the Project64 emulator that supports multiplayer games using the Kaillera network.

    What's new on v0.13:
    • You can use different input plugins for online games.
    • Keyboard shorcuts fixed for online games, although i wouldn't use the fullscreen (Alt + Enter) because most probably it would make you lose connection...
    • Now the host (the 1st player) controls the cheats that will be used in the game.
    • You can send the chat messages using Ctrl+M while playing.
    • The emulator doesn't crash when the host presses the "Cancel" button, or a player presses the "Leave" button on the kaillera window
    Known issues:
    • When open the kaillera window, the following plugins will be loaded: Jabo's Direct3D7 1.40 (Jabo_Direct3D7.dll) Azimer's Audio v0.30 (Old Driver) (AudioHLE.dll)
    • Use of controllers' plugins (mempak, rumblepak, etc) is not compatible for netplay games.
    • Adaptoid's plugin doesn't work online, although the adaptoid can be used with Jabo's plugin.
    • The emulator crashes if the kaillera window is closed while an online game is being played
    • Desynchronization may occur (although is not very common), so try ending the emulation and starting the game again if this happens.
Thanks to IxI SoNiK IxI for the news.
